Telkom and Netgear router issues

So my friend is having an issue with his Telkom account, apparently whenever his router restarts (every time there's load shedding), he can't get an internet connection anymore once it comes back up, and he has to get Telkom to change his password and then update it in the router, he says one of the support guys said something about ya it's these Netgear routers, but I can't see any reason why it could be the router. I checked in his router and on the status page, it says connected, but the light stays red, and there isn't any internet access on the network.

Apparently Telkom even have an sms service where you sms them and they send you a new password, so it must be a very common problem for them.

Anyone know why this might be?

Haven't had any problems with my Netgear and Telkom so seems very odd.

I find it very strange that he has to change his password the whole time, makes no sense to me. He even tried a spare router (also a Telkom Netgear router though)

Would be interesting to see if another router does anything, but probably is a faulty account system.

Also ask him to get Telkom to do a port reset before changing the password.
Never had password issues like this at any of my clients, however the red light has been the port not connecting properly so a reset fixes that.

Shot, I'll tell him

Some routers are full of shit like this.... and there is a difference between saving a password, and writing config to memory.

If he is saving his password, it may only keep it until the router loses power. See if he has a "Save config" option, and be sure to do this after saving the password.

I had a problem with a Netgear modem/router recently as well, although not as bad as this.

My actual router is a Trendnet, but it got zapped by lightning a week and a bit ago. Luckily a friend had a spare Netgear modem for me (it was late on a Sunday) so I used that. The problem was that it kept syncing at low line speeds (max I got was about 2500kbps) while my Trendnet synced at my allocated speed (4096) and would have a max sync of 10-12Mbps. No matter how many times I restarted the modem, it kept syncing low.

On Monday I bought a new Trendnet modem, and voila, it synced at the correct speeds. For interest sake I reconnected the Netgear and once again it synced at the lower speeds.

No idea what is up with that, I just know that I'd rather stick with my Trendnet one :)

I checked for that, there's just one apply button that takes a minute to save, and it does keep the other settings like user name that he has to put in after a factory reset so it should keep the password too.

Also the connection status says connected, no login failed or anything.

Weird. Could it have been an old router that can't do higher speeds maybe?

Go to logs and see if there is anything noteworthy there

Also apply does save all settings in the router

Most probably Telkom's fault, fucking bastards!!!! Still waiting for them to fix my damn line. 3 weeks...they never call before pitching up and when they arrive it is some no name brand incompitent clown that works on the line for 5min then claims its fixed only for it to die again a hour later.

(Sorry not exactly helpful...but I hate them so much!!!!!!)

Sometimes it is a firmware or chip incompatibility which causes those issues

The hate is strong with this one.

That not calling before they pitch up drives me insane. I don't know how they think everyone is always home.

Buy ya I would also think it's a Telkom thing.

I have absolutely no idea, but I can't imagine that it is too old to do a faster speed.
Although it pisses me off at least I have a backup modem, damn lightning. R800 for a new modem, insurance excess is R1000 so I had to buy it cash.

Been fighting with Telkom so much over the last couple of months.
It drives me insane, paying R1000 a month for adsl that doesn't work and they are just so fucking useless at fixing the fault.

I'm furious with them at the moment, tomorrow I am getting in my car and I'm going to a branch...heads will roll.

News Update! A madman with a white face, green hair and wicked red grin has set alight a local Telkom office. They are calling him The Joker and so far, no one has been able to stop him, not even AlienTaker

lol nice one bud.

They will shit bricks though, I've been more than patient with them but now I've had enough.

I try keep as far from Telkom as possible. Sadly you can't get a line from anyone else but I definitely avoid them as an isp
