So I've noticed the price of new PC games is getting ridiculous in the shops lately.

You can't compare things like that. The avg salary in the USA is $2500. So if u want to compare apples with apples then that would make it R20 000 wouldn't it?
It's just not realistic to compare things like this

I'm not saying that it's right, but that's how most imports work. We don't get cheaper PS3s and Xbox 360s because we are 'poor South Africans'.

I understand your POV, but the importers also fleece us as gaming is still considered a 'luxury' in this country :(

Be that as it may, if you want to "game" then u should be prepared to pay for what you want :) Me? Im awaiting my $100 dollars worth of PS3 games my canadia friend is sending me :D Gotta love gamestop ;)

i'm just getting sick and tired of hearing the same crap over and over again. This is nothing new.

As you get older you'll realize that eventually everything will become monotonous. It's up to you how you perceive things though.

Stuff gets more expensive over a period of time, that is the economic trend. It's called inflation.

And people will always complain about prices. It's normal. I was rather annoyed the other day when I bought a game online and they wanted to charge me R60 for delivery. A couple of months ago this wouldn't have mattered but as I am currently on the look for a job after closing my company, I have to be careful with how I spend my money.

A developer will make something that he thinks has a certain value, he will express this value in monetary terms. So please don't bitch about it on a forum, either you can afford it or you can't.

So what I'm trying to say is that it's what forums are for. We can complain here about inflation and things getting too expensive. It's a tough time for a lot of people and giving our views on the matter on a forum such as this is a way of letting off steam. It's a place where we can do it together and feel a bit better afterwards.

Agreement with Solitude.

Rather pointless to attack someones views since it may very well be the first time they have discussed it with people at large. Just because something is 'old-sock' for you does not give you the right to aggressively verbally assault them dismissing them so easily. That is exceedingly narcissistic.

Now it is another story if a person keeps going on about something where people have clearly given them input and they refuse to acknowledge it.

*Oh, and while I do understand the sentiment. The thing is you will encounter this kind of recycling of the same issues over and over and over on many levels. If you feel you can not respond in a constructive manner, might as well say nothing. That is what I try and do most of the time.*

If the price increases were inflation/currency based (As they have been for as long as I can remember.) I wouldn't have an issue. The increase in certain games has been closer to 30% than the rate of inflation which is around 8%. If you can explain away that extra 22% I will bow down to your infinite wisdom, until then how about a little less snark.

R399 for a PC game is quite a fair price imo. PC games have been in the R300 to R400 price range for years now. What's changed?

Two points immediately spring to mind.

A) As Isengard pointed out, games have weathered inflationary trends over the past ten years exceptionally well. I remember buying Carmagedon and Theme Hostpital for R300 each, that was ten years ago. Compared to pretty much everything else, such as CDs, food, electronics, cars, property etc, games have remained quite cheap IMO. In fact, I would say that they are cheaper now relative to everything else than they were ten years ago.

B) Games these days are far more expensive to develop than they ever have been. Development teams are bigger, and the tech being used is more expensive. Developers actually need to charge more to maintain their profits.

In summary, I really dont think that PC game pricing is a problem. If you do find games bit heavy on the wallet then buy carfully. The best thing to do if you are in such a situation is wait unti games come down to the R200 mark.

Too be honest most games haven't really change in price. Most games this year that I have bought have still been in the R300-R400 price range just like last year. You just need to shop online, look around and take advantage of pre order pricing. There are the exceptions like publishers like square enix but most prices are fairly stable.

I remember paying R300 for warcraft 3. That was in 2002 If memory serves me right. Inflation since then has been roughly about 45-55% so games should now be costing in the region of R450.

But if you take the size of our entertainment industry which is about as big as the tampon industry in New York and the cost of capital prices should have increased by about 70%-100% over the last 8 years.

Just rough estimates don't have figures on hand.

I was at Incredible Infection yesterday and saw that most new PC games were retailing for R400, nothing for R450.

damn, I missed all the fun ......... still can't fathom why some people have to jump onto other people and get on their case just because said other person is having a vent
