As you are aware, I am wanting to be selling my HD5970 and getting at minimum the R9 280x by your recommendation.

My question is simple. On paper and comparing the 5970 vs 280x & 290x it appears my current card whips these cards arses, why then should I upgrade?

I can't fathom how a six year old card is still keeping up and owning newer cards of equal caliber. Please enlighten me, or is this just a matter of seeing the new cards in practice rather than on paper.

My input:

R9 280x is a rebranded 7970. That said, they're very nice cards. Where on paper are you seeing the 5970 coming NEAR the 280x. my own google searches come up with people asking which is better: 2x 5970's vs R9 280'x? and answers are go for 280x.

You should upgrade, its a fair step up, better RAM, better tesselation, you get the GCN goodies :)

And if you're getting a 2nd hand R290x (due to all the mining rigs) its also likely to be at a VERY good price.

Okay, then this is what originally brings me to ask the questions and for people to enlighten me. I don't understand how this site can represent stats almost double that of the 280x.

In no way shape or form will a 5970 beat a 280X, not even close.
The pic you've posted here is from a comparison site which means absolutely nothing.

As someone that's owned multiple 5970's and 280X cards I can tell you now a 280X wipes the floor with a 5970.

Well this is why I ask, and I appreciate your feedback. I in no way shape or form am trying to talk down on you. I know you know your shit, this is why I asked. I just couldn't understand how the comparison site could show statistics like this.

Would a 270x be much of an improvement?

Immediately below that:

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

One or more cards in this comparison are multi-core. This means that their bandwidth, texel and pixel rates are theoretically doubled - this does not mean the card will actually perform twice as fast, but only that it should in theory be able to. Actual game benchmarks will give a more accurate idea of what it's capable of.

Also here are some actual performance benchmarks percentaages:

lol relax :D

I would honestly just go straight for the 280X, the 270X is a good card but the 280X is a great card with a much longer shelf life.
If you don't mind waiting, look at AMD's new offerings (June/July) and then decide where you want to go. From what I've seen the R9 380/x will just be rebranded R9 290/X cards with some new tech and cooling stuck on to them and they should be well priced.

Thing is, the card is old and probably right time to be retired. Also, if I don't do this now I will not be able to do it in the future, for a long time. Considering my new move and what not. I am hence looking for a card that will give me equal service in terms of life time.

Then the R9 280X is def the way to go bud. Its a strong card it maxes most games @ 1080P no problem.

Haha theres actually a member called 1080!

And can confirm as to the awesome that is the R9 280x :)

lol yip, noticed that the other day..hence the edit :D

Beo go for a 280X bud, fantastic card, great performance and pretty cheap when buying 2nd hand.

Came across this: http://carbonite.co.za/f40/powercolor-r9-280x-turbo-duo-94759/

I'm just not sure about PowerColor. Doesn't seem like a bad price either.

Well only 1 company in SA does powercolor, pm the guy selling the card and ask him for the serial number and then phone them and confirm warranty. Never buy a gpu without warranty and make sure how much warranty is remaining. (That's if the guy doesn't have the proof of purchase)

I also think you should make him an offer of R2600 and you'll collect or something along those lines.

I dunno eh... PowerColor and Saphire I've always known to be meh branded cards. Does the brand play that big of a role?

Can I jump on the R9-280x bandwagon here? AMD are doing great work with drivers these days. The last driver updates have somehow lowered the heat readings* I got from MSI Afterburner when the card is under load. Artifacts I got when the card got hot are pretty much gone, haven't noticed anything since the upgrade. How do you explain that?
BeoTeK, it is really a great card. I've been using my Gigabyte card now for 5 months and I max out every game at 1080p and always play above 40fps. Less demanding games I easily get 60-70fps, if not more. Also got it on recommendation from The Joker, who actually supplied and assembled with the whole machine for me.

*I have a very small and compact case, so YMMV (for the better).

I don't mean to go on here, but what difference do different brands affect the same chipset?

I mean if you get a 280x by Powercolor and a 280x by MSI - apart from the obvious, cooling and housing, what main factors could there be and why are price difference so varied per brand?

:D Thanx bud

Generally warranty and components used during manufacture.

Powercolor have been accused of using cheaper caps and I've noticed they have slightly thinner pcb's.

MSI's are great and so are Gigabyte cards, the Gigabyte R9 280X is a great card (I've owned 3 or 4 of them).

So, summary:

Sell:
HD 5970 @ R1,500 (hopefully by next week)

Buy:
1.) Second hand Powercolor 280x @ R2,700 (Carbonite, cash)
2.) Brand new Gigabyte 280x @ R 4,197 (From Takealot with a R500 voucher)

Your guys personal opinions and thoughts, what would you do?
The idea is that I don't want to upgrade again for a while, or at least until I upgrade my box in 3 years or so.

I'm pretty sure I saw a Gigabyte on carb for R2800 with warranty and packaging.
That's the one I would go for. I wouldn't buy a new 280X now, to late in the game.
Even with the R500 off voucher you're gonna end up spending R3600 on the card, so look at a 2nd hand one with decent warranty.

Well considering R500 + R1500(from old card) = I would only be paying approx R2,000 for a new upgraded card, still not?

I see that one Gigabyte and MSI have both been sold on Carbonite.
