Whose opinion settles it?

There are certain titles that I just buy; no matter what. For example, your Metal Gear Solids, Final Fantasies, etc...

However, when it comes to a new franchise or a switch in developers (Silent Hill...damn, I hate unknown American developers:mad:); I tend to adopt a more considered approach. Reviews are read, gameplay footage scrutinised...the works. I mean R700 is no laughing matter.

So I was just wondering whose gaming opinion you dudes trust the most? For me; its Electronic Gaming Monthly and IGN.com.:D

I tend to look at Metacritic and get an overall view by reading the good and the bad reviews. :)

Of the normal gaming sites I'd have to say that IGN is my favourite.

I guess you do have to check out some bad reviews too. But, between IGN and EGM's opinions; I've never bought I game I've disliked.

I just read the carp you guys post here and then google around for other opinions. But then again, I tend to only play MMO's (until next week when I eventually get my xbox!)

I also tend to go to metacritic, but I usually look for Gamespot and IGN's scores. They have proven themselves to be somewhat in line with my judgement. :)

gamespot, egm and ign are pretty spot on with most reviews, gamepro i try to avoid by all means and metacritic doesnt review they just average out the precentages of the review so even if a game is good and it gets alot of low scores then it will show on metacritic as a low score game, best option is to always try and get hold of a demo

IGN and Metacritic.

Also check forums and try find the 'smart' posts, but those can be really hard to find.

Knowing my own gaming threshold also helps. So if I see an RPG review for about 70%+ I will likely enjoy it, but the same could never be said for action titles which I only tend to enjoy the best ones.

Gametrailers video review. that's how i decide on a new game or not. and so far i'm loving need for speed shift!

The only publication I will specifically look out for for reviews is Edge.

Otherwise, I find that no publications are more reliable than others. Its completely dependent on the reviewer and their taste in comparison to mine. Saying "IGN has good reviews" for example does not make sense to me, as there are a number of different writers who review for IGN and they all have different perspectives on gaming.

Obviously some publications are able to maintain a certain level of quality, that is why I read Edge because they have a very uniform approach to reviewing games. Otherwise, IGN, Gamespot etc, they are all much of a muchness in my opinion.

I do feel that Metacritic is a very powerful tool when you want to get a basic sort of idea of a score for a game.

I find Edge far too bland generally.

I usually read Destructoid, Eurogamer, and occasionally 1UP, and I'll always run through synopses on Metacritic. Although I don't particularly follow any writers on those sites, I kinda know when I'm reading a review that works for me.

YAY! Im not to only Edge reader here.

I have found that, like Tinman said, other websites and publications vary too much. Edge, for me, is the final word. I know if they give a game an 8 or 9, that game earned it. I have also noticed Edge will score a game a 7 and then a site like Teamxbox, which i also take into account, will have it as a 8. I dont go to IGN ever and Gamespot only sees me if a need a 3rd or 4th opinion. I buy GameTM also as it is a good companion to Edge.
