I have a PC...well kinda. It got drop-kicked off a cliff...sorta.

The question is whether it's worthwhile re-using the parts that survived.

The PSU and SSD is easy, memory and CPU I'm less sure. It's a 3570k and 8 gigs of DDR 3 1860 gskill ripjaws.

So 2-3 year old cpu...2 generations behind.

Im guessing keep the RAM and lose the cpu?

Not yet sure about the budget for the build...probably looking at a gaming rig sufficient for 1440p.

Lol! What?

The CPU is fine as well no need to change it. GPU as high as your budget allows, I'd take a AMD: 280x/290 or Nvidia: 970.

If you don't play high requirement games ie. Dota / CS GO even a 270x would be fine at 1440p @60fps

I would say the CPU and Ram will still be good for a few more years, but if its good enough for 1440p I can't tell you.

PC took a trip on a plane & boat and arrived in pieces. Dunno what exactly happened so I'm going with the cliff story.
That's quite sad hopefully you get your new parts soon then :), yeah I like the cliff story.

That CPU will be more than fine. I have the i5 2500K and it never runs out of steam. So just overclock the 3570K and you shouldn't have any problems any time soon. It should overclock to 4.5GHz or so quite easily without needing a voltage tweak, however you might need a better aftermarket air cooler.

So keep the CPU and RAM (if both are still in working order). If the PC had an HDD in as well that might be damaged, just run some checks. If it was only the SSD then that should be fine.

For a GPU, it really depends on what you want to play. Since you want to game at 1440p though, I would suggest you don't get a 970 due to the memory issue; rather go for the 290 or 290x if money allows. Alternatively, wait for the 300 series and see what that delivers.

Consoles screwed the progress of PC games for a long time, only now that the i5-2500k has grown old, and PS4 got released have they stepped up the requirements.

All you need in terms of cpu is a i5 that's second gen or more.
