No Man's Sky

Okay, is it just me or are other here also really getting hyped for No Man's Sky?

This game looks absolutely amazing, not just that but I kinda get the feeling that it's going to revolutionise gaming. At least the way procedural generations work in video games. The calculations and algorithms they've been using are astounding, just the logic behind it. I have been watching all the dev videos, behind the scenes and talks and discussions about this one.

I must say. This one seems to be flying under the radar. Everyone knows about it, but where's the excitement?

For Science!

I propose a little experiment for anyone getting the game. If we can do this we can showcase the vastness of the game and what it has to offer.

Basically, you take a screenshot of the very first landscape you see when starting the game for the first time, after the intro is done and post it in this thread. From when you have control of your character, I believe everyone will start on the surface of a planet and need to find a ship.

Let's see and share what everyone's starting point looks like within the game and vistas you are afforded.

Also, please state the name of your home planet for cartographic archives.

I've been keeping a close eye on this one. look potentially amazing. I just hope they still deliver what they promised after having to rebuild the entire game

Rather concerned that its being over-hyped / over-promised. Specifically on the procedural generation talk...thats good if you need to generate non-descript backgrounds that don't all look 100% identical...but its not going to add substance.

e.g. the Diablo dungeons etc are procedurally generated...but the storyline & key events is not.

...and I haven't seen much of an over-arching vision/plan on that front.

Creating an infinite amount of worlds is easy, filling them with an infinite amount of varying* creatures is easy. The hard part is making sure that you don't bump into the same flora or fauna every third planet. I think the biggest challenge the devs are facing is how to make use of clever asset redeployment in their games.

*Varying is extremely subjective in this regard. An Orange is Orange, a Blue Orange is still an Orange but it's blue so how different do you regard it as? A little or a lot?

No Man's Sky is so big, the developers built space probes to explore it for them
There's a robot that lives inside No Man's Sky that nobody outside of the development team may ever see, because its entire purpose is to fly to each of the game's 18 quintillion worlds, take short videos and document its interstellar travels as a series of animated GIFs.

Quite an interesting read, and I must say. I am getting aped for this big time. One of the definite purchases of 2015 for me.

My only concern for this game is... What do you actually do? Do you just explore? is that it?

watched most of that 1st vid and I still don't know what this game is other then a world generator. It kinda looks like an advanced take on minecraft, with the ability to span across worlds.

Without being able to mine stuff and build things? :wtf:

Ok so i googled, "No mans Sky what do you do" and got this which was pretty informative...

Apparently you do, what ever you want...

The dev's have been keeping some of the major gameplay under wraps apparently. They really need to try to control the hype so everyone isn't let down.

I'm definitely interested though!

Yeah, they have it sealed up like a dolphins butt..... water tight! ^_^

But that's the thing, I think this game looks amazing and technically it is. They really making headway in terms of game development and what I find strange is that the internet isn't really abuzz about it. I mean apart from the small article or mention here or there. And what I find even more impressive is this title is coming from a tiny little development house with around 10 people, not to mention they lost all their work a year or so ago fro flooding and had to start everything over.

The best part of Minceraft was the fact that I could do whatever I want. So many times I just explored and never build or mined anything. Yes, some mods were required to make it more interesting, but crossing a mountain range to find a pirate ship in the ocean, or finding a canyon and cave system and just exploring it, is how I spent most of my days in Minecraft.

If No Man's Sky can give me that sense of exploration in space, then I am in!

EDIT: Hehe - mince raft...

I'm all aboard with exploration. Minecraft, Terraria and Starbound offer this chance to build your own world, with some light mission-based objectives thrown in. But at their core they're exploration titles - you dig a little deeper to see what comes up next; you head towards that light to see what it is.

I'll be first to admit that I rarely use those games to build stuff - other than the necessities to house crafting stations et al.

If NMS can give enough motivation for exploration - if they make it sufficiently rewarding - then I'm all in for this.

It's going up against the likes of Limit Theory and the big guns of Star Citizen - but so far NMS is the only one that's caught my eye. I love the ideas of the other games, but it feels like they're aiming for more complexity, like a next-gen EVE Online or something; a call to be almost heavily invested in the worlds.

I prefer the idea of picking up my controller and going "where can I explore today?" - and finding cool things along the way. (If it allows for limited co-op in some way, that would be awesome as well, though I don't think this will be happening.)

I'm trying not to get too excited by it, but I like what I've seen so far.

I call MC/Terreria super clone.

The ability to create cross worlds, trade routes and production. In that 1st video u posted I saw multiple worlds, asteroid belts and caves. So each planet will offer its own resources and challenges.

Will be interesting to see where this goes.

This game is a perfect example why gaming studios needs a good PR department. I'm sure these guys are absolutely amazing programmers and developers, but they are NOT cut out for presentation or PR stuff. Like AT ALL!! Just the fact that no one knows what this game is or can do is some of the evidence of it. I've seen a fair few interviews with the dev team, and they all talk a lot about the game without saying anything. And I don't believe it's because they want to keep it a secret, because they are inadvertently hyping the game incorrectly, setting up people to be highly disappointing.

On another note, I'm glad it got confirmed to be coming to PC.
