This is a screenshot of my Teamspeak connection info. Guess which one is Afrihost... (Hint: it's the one with the broken packet loss) Not only in Teamspeak but this affects my gaming and even YouTube. In case anyone has been wondering, yes, I am being shaped, but according to Afrihost, they only shape Torrents and downloads (I think). The other screenshot is on a capped account from Axxess. So you tell me? Does gaming and VoIP count as downloading?

This has been a problem from before we moved houses last year and have been getting it on - off non stop. Some days are okay, but most have at least a few hours of this bullsh*t...

As for their support? I think this says more then enough...

Afrihost doesn't work with Xbox LIVE either. Constant disconnects, which I assume are caused by packet loss, as well as party chat and matchmaking issues. Afrihost tell me it's a problem my side, and basically that because not every single user has reported it, they're not going to investigate further. And just to be clear, I have absolutely no issues when using any other ISP such as Webafrica. Everything runs smoothly. I cancelled Afrihost earlier this month, and will be starting with Webafrica in April. I've given up on Afrihost's constants excuses and attempts to blame everything but their own network.

Wow I had the exact problem, and you're right I also had a shaping policy active when I experienced terribe packet loss. It's Afrihost, but funny thing is Counter Strike (which is on local servers) ran fine at a ping of around 50 ms. Heroes of the storm however had a ping of 2000 ms in some instances, which was quite frustrating. So there's definitely a link between their shaping policy being active and packet loss. Here is the pathping to the blizzard HOTS server:

Maybe get a 1 gb account for gaming (excluding updates) if you experience this.

But isnt it general knowledge that their uncapped accounts to get shaped...im pretty sure its in their t's and c's...i have a capped account with them and have not experienced any of this

I have been saying this OVER AND OVER for gaming in SA the telkom accounts are irreplaceable . Its so bad that 2 or 3 rounds in you can feel if you are on telkom or another ISP.

The hitreg on telkom is pure and none of the lag bs. USE Telkom get yourself a account and just test it.

But back to that . AH 70% packet loss is inexcusable . ID take them to the ombudsman.

Telkom is perma-shaped. Not the best for games.
Rather get a capped account.

I have been with afrihost for 3 years now no issue. But for gami g i usually have a back up 10gb capped account for when i feel lag is a bit rough ut that normally only happe s when i hit about 250 or 300gb

Fot the guy with xbox live dropping i have never had that issue check your firewall settings cos i have never been dropped unless it was down

If it was a firewall issue, it would be an issue on other ISPs too, which it isn't. I've also tried turning off the firewall completely, as well as using DMZ, and it hasn't made a difference. It seems Cape Town users are more affected than other regions, as I know a number of people in CPT who have the same issue. It looks like you're from Pretoria, so maybe that's why you haven't experienced the same problem.

just to clarify, are you guys with major packetloss all using UNCAPPED accounts ? i am using an AH capped account and it seems ok.

Just get a high cap account, 100 - 200gb. It's unshaped and no BS.

Uncapped accounts are heavily overrated among the users

Strangely enough that XBox Live issue that someone mentioned. I get that with Afrihost Mobile too but with Telkom Mobile it's fine. Afrihost Mobile has been fine for Diablo III though but doesn't seem to work well with XBox Live.

This is what I am doing for now, although 1GB is VERY low, even for only gaming usage.

Although it's true that uncapped accounts generally get shaped (or even throttled), Afrihost has told me MULTIPLE times that gaming will NEVER be affected. Capped accounts are always unshaped and unthrottled which is why it never gives problems.

Telkom is perma-shaped. Not the best for games. Rather get a capped account.

Been thinking of getting a capped account, but my monthly usage changed A LOT. For example, 1 month I did 149 GB but the following month I did 318. See why capped can be a problem? Also when it gets to a certain point of usage, capped becomes a bit expensive.

I am on a Uncapped account. Also capped accounts usually don't give problems. Capped accounts don't have to worry about the ISP shaping/throttling you to save them money. (This is how I see it)

I would agree that uncapped is overrated, but read my reply to smitti. Any suggestions on what kind of capped account to get? I would like the price to be in the same range as the 4 MB uncapped.

as much issues as I've had with them I still have had no issues in regards to gaming performance with mweb

In my case I have a 75GB capped package, so it's meant to be unshaped. But as someone mentioned, the uncapped are meant to be unshaped on gaming too, so there shouldn't be a difference.

Just to clarify, when I say disconnects on Xbox LIVE, I mean getting kicked out of games, not Xbox LIVE itself. This specifically happens in peer 2 peer, such as FIFA 15. It's not constant, and happens maybe once an hour, but it happens regularly enough to be a problem. I've also seen many party chat issues with Afrihost, even when the player has an open NAT.

Server based games seem to be much better, so it's something to do with how Afrihost routes P2P traffic for games on both capped and uncapped accounts that causes packet loss. They don't seem to have the technical capabilities to investigate something like that though, as I reported issues starting as far back as December, so Webafrica it is for me.

I have been gaming on telkom uncapped and capped accounts for years now. Never had any issues. THis is 99% locally hosted FPS games. The downloads on telkom is slow but gaming . I have never had an issue.

Manority of my mates who take part in fps comps has a capped telkom account they swap over to religiously before a big game. these include several DGL rage winners.

Maybe he meant it sucks for non local gaming

most of my clan mates were on afrihost each one was having constant TS issues and all their support calls ended with there is nothing wrong on our side .

they have come over to Mweb since and been a bit better but this phase was pathetic

and yeah they were all on uncapped and below their threshold

Thanks for replying. This is unacceptable in my opinion. I understand that we need to get shaped so we don't over abuse our uncapped accounts, but I honestly believe that, even though the usage might be high, VoIP and gaming should NEVER be touched and some would say the same for streaming (doesn't bother me as much).

I guess this is what we get for living in a third world country. ISP's can't keep up with the technology that is improving. For example, HD quality streaming is a MUST (although I don't stream a lot) which is a lot of data consumption. Not even considering the fact that 4K will be a thing in the (not so far) future.

As for MWEB. I would rather stay away. A few friends of mine are having the worst time there, but, yet again, they are on uncapped accounts.
