Severe Toothache

Does anybody here know of any home remedies that can help relieve the pain of severe toothache? I've been struggling with toothache for a couple of days now, but from yesterday it has become absolutely unbearable. The earliest I could get a dentist appointment is this Friday so I'm looking for something that can help me survive until then.

I have tried asparin (Disprin), paracetemol (Panado) and ibuprofen (Myprodol) with almost no luck. Disprin worked the best but I have heard that I shouldn't be taking aspirin if I am going to dentist since it thins the blood which can become an issue if I need to have a tooth extracted. Panado works for about an hour and Myprodol is (strangely) not doing anything at all for me. I have also tried clove oil, rinsing with warm salt water and hot/cold pads with little to no effect. I bought myself some teething gel earlier today and it seems to help, but only a little bit and only for a little while. I also got apple cider vinegar and baking soda which I will try out tonight after work.

This is probably the worst pain I have experienced in my life and I'm struggling to sleep at night. If I wake up during the night I rinse my mouth with listerine and that helps with the intense pain but it doesn't last very long.

Any tips or remedies that anyone has would be greatly appreciated, I just need to survive until Friday.

Unofrtunately not much helps, I use Genpyne for tooth aches, then if all else fails, alcohol - I use vodka, take a swallow, hold it over the tooth - the pain will almost kill you - but then it goes numb, take something to help you fall asleep - once asleep it will be ok for a while. Teething gels - the only one that ever worked for me was Teejel the rest doesnt touch a tooth ache, teething powders sometimes works, but for short periods of time. I can't do the clove oil thing, it makes me ill.

Dude, you need to get to a dentist sooner than later. It sounds like you have an abscess. In severe cases, the infection might spread and lead to nausea, vomiting, the sh*ts etc. and then you might be too weak to get to the dentist. I doubt you are going to be able to withstand the pain until Friday, it only gets worse. If you get hold of the dentist and tell them that it is an emergency because of the pain, then they'll either take you or refer you to another dentist. Trust me, you need to get it looked at today for your own sanity.

As for remedies, cloves are natural anesthetic and if you hold one in your mouth where the pain is, it might help a little. It's not going to be better than pain medication though.

Yeah, I've heard that I should try Vodka or Whiskey but I don't drink alcohol at all so there is none in my flat. The Listerine mouthwash kind of works the same but it doesn't last very long. I tried taking some of my brother's sleeping pills but it seems the pain is stronger than them since I still wake up throughout the night.

Yeah, I also thought it might be an abscess but there is no swelling whatsoever and from what I know there should be swelling if it's an abscess. I think the culprit is an old filling that fell out and now the nerves are exposed or something.

I wish I could go to a dentist earlier but unfortunately I don't have medical aid and dentists are crap ecpensive so I have to wait until I have money on Friday.

Wlad, can't you get an overdraft on your account or maybe use a credit card? Or maybe get an advance from your work? Sheesh your toothache sounds horrible!

Some dentist will let you go in and only pay later you just need to ask them.

Try to build up some spit in your mouth and hold it over the pain area you can also try some warm salt water.

Trust me, it is horrible. Presently it's manageable with the pain at about a 5 or 6 on a scale of one to 10 (thanks to teething gel), but when I woke up during the night last night it was at a solid 10. This morning there was no pain but after about an hour at work it went right back to a 10 until I bought and used the gel.

My credit card is unfortunately out of the question. I haven't considered an overdraft yet, might look into that if I can't find something to keep the pain at bay. I even asked my mom but she can't help until Friday either. I'm just gonna have to tough it out unfortunately.

The salt water does nothing for me man, interestingly enough though, the spit thing actually helps a little thanks!

Getting time off work to see a dentist earlier is also a problem as I already took yesterday off because I couldn't work with the amount of pain I was in and the company won't let me take more time off without a doctor's letter. I already have Friday off so that works out, if I can only make it until then.

I am actually going to see my GP after work to see if he can't give me an injection or a prescription or something to help with the pain. At least I can pay him later since he's been my doctor for most of my life so he's cool with that.

Hi dude,

I am currently on the same boat, it can become excruciating at times.

Grab yourself some clove oil, it isn't too expensive and a syringe. Extract some with the syringe (careful, very little). You want to get the oil on the culprit with as little spillage as possible (especially on your lips).

Do not rinse your mouth after applying and endure for about ten minutes. You may spit to get rid of the excess clove oil.

Works like a bomb.

Goodluck

Sorry to hear that. It will probably be worthwhile going to a private dentist though. Abscesses don't always show visible swelling. You might not even know you have an abscess until it becomes severely infected and you experience pain like that.

Edit: Just to be clear, I am not a doctor or a dentist. I am giving you this advice based on personal experience, experience with friends and family having the same issue and medical practitioners in my family. I encourage you to see a dentist, private or otherwise as soon as possible because of the serious consequences that I was made aware of in a similar situation. Again, I'm just a guy on the Internet that has no medical experience outside of post-graduate studies in cochlear implants.

Quick question - do you by any chance have an Edgars account? If you do, you can go see a dentist at a Medicross. They accept payment via your edgars account.

Damn, I remember this pain. What I did was to put ice cold water in my mouth and that relieved the pain for a minute or so... then as soon as the water warmed up in my mouth, the pain started again so I had to spit out and take a new sip. Did that the whole night and then went to a dentist in the morning who performed an emergency root canal and then filled it with medicine which relieved the pain a lot.

I would strongly recommend making a plan and going to a dentist sooner as mentioned above. I think that initial emergency root canal takes 30 minutes and was about R700 (couple of years ago though) and then had to walk around with the medicine fillings for a couple of days before going back to have the root canal completed and filled.

From that experience, I'm quite scared of that pain. If I have the slightest chip or anything with a tooth that doesn't seem quite right, I go to the dentist straight away. That way, I can at least control to which dentist I go to and not just any quack. The decent dentists usually have a waiting list for a couple of days. When it is an emergency, you pretty much take what you can get just to get rid of the pain.

I didn't know that, that's pretty cool. I do have an Edgars account but I don't have any credit available on it at the moment. Coincidentally the dentist I have an appointment at for Friday is at a Medicross so I'm gonna ask ky mom if I can use her Edgars account for now and try to get an earlier appointment. Thanks!

If this is true, this a genius suggestion.

When I couldnt afford a dentist, that is what I did. And the guys they had at the place I went to, were really great. Just call them to check if they still do it. I even went for physio sessions and because I was paying with the edgars card and not medical aid, she took pity on me and charged me a lower rate, I paid R150 per session for 6 sessions.

I had the same, and normal salt didnt work at all. EPSOM SALTS saved me, pain medication did nothing. Take a small glass of luke warm water, like a quarter cup, add about 2-3 teaspoons of Epsom Salts and rinse, keep it going over the tooth.

I couldnt sleep, felt so annoyed, but this helped me a lot. I couldnt touch my tooth with my tongue so bad the pain was. But after about a day, rinsing a lot, it helped.

I looked up Epsom Salts after, the stuff is actually really awesome....and cheap.

Just dont swallow, Epsom is a laxative of note...

LOL @ teething gel, luckily we some of my sons left and my wife suggested it...that stuff is great for a short while.

Awesome thanks, I'll see if I have some Epsom and give it a try.

Yeah, the teething gel helps almost instantly but it only lasts a few minutes. I tried rinsing my mouth with baking soda (bicarb of soda) and apple cider vinegar and it really works as well. It tastes pretty terrible but it takes away the pain almost instantly. It doesn't last long either but it will definitely help if I wake up during the night and it's supposed to get better with more rinsing.

Honestly nothing works long. I have had bad tooth aches in my life time. Sucks when you can't afford the dentist. If its infected they give you anti biotics and you'll have to see them a later time.
