New Internet - What to get

Hey Guys

So I am moving into my new flat throughout May & June, and want to have my internet sorted by the time I move in. I am just torn between what to actually get. I could go with a normal Telkom line and get a new ADSL account (old one is being cancelled). I also want to look at the different wireless solutions that are becoming more popular, heard the speeds are pretty good. There is also fibre in the area however those prices get a bit steep.

I don't want to pay more than R1000 a month, so is good ole' ADSL the way to go or should I try out one of these new services.

Anyone used G-Connect ? https://gconnect.wirelessg.co.za/uncappedadsl.aspx

Also looks decent: http://www.airtelecom.co.za/adsl/capped-adsl-internet/

This fibre seems pretty cheap too https://123net.co.za/en/front/areas/plans/

Sorry this is the first time I have to organize internet from scratch,

With wireless just add about 50-100 ping to everything we had wireless when we where there and well it was poor.
I would so go for 123net but they might not fit in with your date of getting it see mybroadband for full explination. So perhaps 3g till they can install some fibre.

Thanks 123net looks pretty good, almost too good to be true though?

Wouldn't be a train smash if it took a while to get installed.

EDIT: After reading up on 123net on Mybroadband they seem very sketchy

EDIT: Another option could be just transferring the current Telkom line rental to the new residence and getting ADSL.

Hopefully the new residence already has a phone line/port inside, otherwise it is more waiting since Telkom will have to install one or give you a drop wire (if there is a pole close enough).

I also had wireless internet for a while about 2 years ago. I didn't like it. The speeds were inconsistent, and if you game online it sucks. Latency is high and you get DC'd if the weather is shitty.

Ah right, there is a port already so I am pretty sure the block already has a line throughout it. Might be easier to ask telkom to transfer the current line ? or just get them to come sort out a new one.

Transfer the current one, it is quicker that way. Otherwise if you cancel you have to reapply and that takes a lot of time.

So they just take your current land line number and transfer it to the new port. Takes 2 - 3 weeks usually.

I'd give you hint what I'd get: You can see through it and if you eat it in your cereal your bowel movements will make you sing about getting it all that morning.

Spoiler: show
Fibre

What is your data usage a month? Sometimes it's economically more sound to get a capped account than an uncapped.

Haha the fibre options seem quite expensive though, my usage at the moment is about 200gb per month, however that is with 2 of us and quite a lot of downloads / steam updates & downloads, however most of that usage is probably my room mate.

So the usage will go down, only thing is we aren't going to have DSTV (bye bye Supersport ) , and will be changing over to streaming services, so will still use a lot.

What is an average usage per month ? I do expect it to drop being just me and the GF.

OK, do this: Go for uncapped and stick with it for a few months. Then check your average usage and see if capped would work out cheaper. Also, there have been rumours of Telkom upgrading all 2Mbit lines to 4Mbit free of charge, so you may want to keep that in mind as well.

As far as ISPs go, I have capped fatpipe from Vox and I will recommend it, because I got it for free (1TB Samsung Smart TV promotion). Crystal Web have just won ISP of the year over on MyBB so you may want to have a look at them as well.

Yeah have been looking at them, I will only be moving in June so end of May I am going to get the line transferred then when all sorted I will get an uncapped account probably, might be some specials on by then.

The only Fibre thats available in Umhlanga is 123net, and something seems fishy about them

Take a look at Crystal Web. I switched over to them From Open Web and have no regrets.

The support is fantastic, the line is holding its own and I have no issues whatsoever. Open Web is a shit hole and you should never consider them.

I will once again also vouch for CrystalWeb. They are amazing. Their capped accounts are also not that bad. I am currently on a 10Mbps Capped account, with 600GB (120GB during the day and 480GB from 00:00 to 06:00). They are a bit more expensive than other ISP's, but in my eyes it is worth it because I haven't had issues with speed (not even when I had an uncapped account with them) and support is really quick.
