Start with a carton box colored in and stuff added to it pretty much the easiest way of getting started. Then move on to outfits and then costume creation.

I honestly don't know anything about the local cosplay scene so couldn't tell you if it'll be worth the effort or not, but hey, you gotta start somewhere I guess...
