Parental Corner

Just past the 10 month mark, and is already a handful with the crawling and standing up against stuff, being able to reach things on top of other things. Putting things (especially food) on top of chairs and then standing and eating off the chair.

He's also started interactive play where i roll a ball to him, he picks it up and throws it back so I can roll it back to him. Mom is being called "mom" and I'm "Dada", all dogs are "Do" and cats are "Ka"...balls are "Ba" so we're getting there with the talking as well.

Sounds about the right time to start walking. My boy started walking at 1 day past 11 months, which people tell me is pretty early, but I think a lot of kids start walking somewhere around 10 or 11 months.

Interestingly, by boy started learning words from the back, so I was "ad" at first, and his uncle Cobus was "bus" for a while, etc.

LOL, this is the only place I can put this without sounding like a dumbass, but the other day my kid was listening to songs with his oupa, and The Lion Sleeps Tonight was placing, so he looks up at everyone and says "Lion Tired!". Frikken cutest thing ever!

Well kid seems to be settling into his new school well. He still cries a little when I drop him off, but he stops very quickly and he likes to talk about what stuff is at school and his teacher and everything. Much better than last time.

That's awesome man. Great when they come home being so expressive and full of stories ^_^

As some of you may or may not be aware, I'm pretty much a single father raising my son. And as such I don't have much time to get out and as a result my physical fitness has taken a huge knock. I used to cycle avidly and used to put in +-200Km a week. I have thought about starting to run or trail running, but again, what do I do with my son!

I don't know if anyone out there has any recommendations for me or what I might be able to do to get out of this slump, I really miss feeling active and fit. Flex, I know you're a gym bunny?

lol far away :(

Margate bud, but far too far. I just feel my muscles are starting to atrophied from sitting all darn day. I had to move some office furniture around the other day and I was sore from such a little bit of work.

Maybe try go to the beach, do some running and get your boy to play along... Try doing light workouts at home while he is sleeping (stretches, jogging on the spot, some crunches/situps etc?)

I would say start with something simple. Just jogging and stretching again. most import though, eating healthy and regularly. There are also lots of plyometric (body weight) routines that you can do at home!

How far away are you from MH? Cos then you two can work out together? Or at the very least take the little one for walks around the block - see how far he can go - it will teach him that being fit is good as well

Come on BeoTeK, give in to the dark side.... turn into one of the horde.... its much nicer to just sit and relax than working out.... tastes better too....

I know what you mean, I used to work out a bit too, I loved that feeling when you did some exercise and feel like you are walking on air when you leave. But alas, to busy atm to even contemplate going back. Work, sit in traffic, get home, dinner and the normal stuff, etc.

Oy kid is sick again since Monday night. And today he's decided that he doesn't like taking medicine anymore.

Yeah, gone are the days I used to get up at 04h30 every morning to go for a morning 30-40km ride before work. Now I can barely drag my ass outta bed before 7am.

I found this blog post, thought it was so cute:

MONSTERS ARE NOT REAL
May 19th, 2015By: Heather

Annabel dictates probably ten or so posts to me every week. She’s pretty prolific! I’ve saved them all for her to read someday, because a lot of them are so sweet and cute. When she dictated this post to me, she very specifically instructed me, “Mom, don’t save this for just us, this post is all about helping kids.” You got it, Annabel.

Hi kids. Today I want to talk to you about monsters.

monsters are NOT real
In this picture, I’m tellin’ a monster it isn’t real.

So, when you think monsters are real and hiding under your bed, they’re really not. If they were, parents would be talkin’ about them everywhere. I know you don’t believe me, but really it’s true.

I don’t believe in monsters anymore, but I used to. I thought they were real because I was only two years old. I heard a wind and I thought it was from a monster. I was so scared I hid under my covers. Sometimes I hide under my covers now after bad dreams. I’m five. Not a lunatic.

Here are three things you can do to remind yourself that monsters aren’t real.

First, do a drawing of a monster and put a big X on it.

Wow, been a hectic week. Kid was so sick on Tuesday that he went ended up in casualty at the clinic where my wife was taking him to see the doctor. He prescribed antibiotics and the normal empaped, nurofen etc for fever, but by wednesday night his fever wasn't coming down (even with empaped suppositories) and he refused to take any other medicine, and he was throwing up and stuff, so we took him to the emergency room, and he spent the whole Wednesday night and Thursday (which happened to be his 2nd birthday  ) in the hospital. Turned out to be a viral infection so the ped took away the antibiotics.

My wife stayed the night in the chair there so I had to race home and pack supplies and be back before they wouldn't let me back in for the night, got a few hours sleep and came back to the hospital by 6 so she could go home and shower and get some sleep.

Kid is getting better now, but he's managed to infect me, my wife, my step-mother and my mother-in-law.

matt - them kiddie bugs are bad, I managed to catch foot and mouth disease from my son! Glad he is getting better!

Ya, pretty hectic hey, next year I think we'll all get flu shots early. He's just started nursery school, so that's most likely where he picked it up

Get flu shots when you are better, you really need them for this winter!
