Reserve your free copy of Windows 10 right now

Make sure your Windows is up to date.
The last time I updated my Windows it resulted in a terrifying black screen of death upon every restart. Took days meddling with the bios, reformatting etc to fix and since then I've been to afraid to update again... Would love the free upgrade though so I guess it's time to face my fears.

Don't have that button.

I never got it automatically as well.
Do the following:

Make sure you have update KB3035583 installed.

Open Control Panel
Open Administrative Tools
Open Task Scheduler Expand on the left "Task Scheduler Library"
Expand Microsoft Expand Windows Scroll down and Expand Setup Click the folder "GWXTriggers"
On the far right is a bunch of options Click "Run"

Should work after that.

People not upgrading is the reason why dx12 will not pick up as fast as

Check this and the same goes for witcher 3. You can clearly see windows 10 is faster in some games. Not slightly like a lot

I generally keep my OS Up-to-date when new updates become available. I only install important updates, no optional ones unless I absolutely need them. Having said that, I don't see update KB3035583 at all. My last update was on 25 May, and it says there are no new updates available to me at this time.

I'm on 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Done and dusted. Gaming PC is ready! Will need to update my laptop though - haven't run Windows updates in 2 months on it. But I'm too lazy right now, lying in bed and gonna watch GoT now on my wife's iPad. :D

so if i understand this correct. if you have win7 and win 8 you can upgrade to win 10 till about a year. After that you will need to pay to get windows 10 ?

If you upgraded to win 10 now it stays as windows 10 untill you format you pc ?

I just find it a bit odd. Im afraid to upgrade all the PCs at the office to win10 then year later i get a bill saying pay up ><... can someone just clarify this for me

I see my PC last checked for updates 3 months ago, Lol due to firewall.

Updating now and hopefully i can reserve mine too

As far as I have it, Win 10 isn't a subscription model. You can upgrade for free within the first year, period. Upgrade and use it on the same (valid) Win 7/8 serial key.

It's like the super cheap prices Win 8 was selling for at launch - the prices went up after that, but you didn't have to pay in on existing licenses.

This is exactly how I've understood it as well. Upgrade any qualifying 7/8 install within the 1st year from 10's launch for free. After that, you'll need to pay to upgrade. Even then, I don't think pricing for Win10 will be huge.
MS are trying to get as many people and as many devices as possible as quickly as possible into the same OS environment, much like Apple and iOS/OS X.
In fact, I get the feeling they're shifting their consumer/retail business model towards something similar to Apples' with a focus on devices, apps, media and Office to generate sales, rather than on a reliance on Windows.
"We'll give you a universal OS, so that you can buy a Surface tablet, XBone exclusive games, a bunch of peripherals and an Office 365 subscription. And have them all work, all over, on everything equally well." It's Steve Jobs all over again.
