Activity competitions useless for attracting new or inactive members

I was almost completely inactive on the forum from the time I joined until about 2013. The only reason I started posting was because of an activity contest, and that was when I realised people actually cared about what I said.

And to think... without the comps getting you involved we would've missed out on all those perfectly timed GIFs :p

Tis what happens when a gaming forum doesn't give away gaming prizes, but rather tech. "whistling:

What!? no, why was I not informed of this O.O

I think it is also true, when there is a comp I tend to post more, it works for me.

Its easy as a new member to become an active member... a post here... and there.... and bam! Youve dug and wormed your way into their lives... wether they wanted it or not :):D"whistling:

i came for the shits and i stayed for the giggles :) seriously, i recall way back in the days that the activity comp at the time lured me in. but what has kept me coming back, are the awesome regulars. so to the OP....your hypothesis is invalid.

this giveaway is useless if its intended to lure participation from new or inactive members

Why make a thread for something this useless and pointless?
I initially did join the thread for a give away that I received an email about.
Came for the Giveaways and stayed for the awesome forum and content!!
So it does work.If you are not interested in posting and only reading, then do so quietly imo :)

So much anger, so much hate...

I can't help but think of Linkin Park's Bleeding Out every time I see posts complaining about the competition, especially the starting words: "Here we go for the hundredth time..."

Clearly the competitions work to lure in people to the forum. I for one have absolutely no problem at all if more newbies and lurkers starts posting during competitions. Regulars should really watch out sometimes, as it can sound like we are entitled to the prizes, as we are the ones contributing the most. But that is the completely wrong approach to take. Competitions are to lure newbies into the forum, and yes, sometimes there will be a swing and a miss with some people joining, but there are some great people that have joined just because of competitions

It pisses me off to see regulars clamber at the bit to complain the moment a competition starts, because the obligatory posts like "here comes the spam" and "urgh all the spam" is irritating and boring. PLEASE NOTE that not all regulars do this though.

This guy/girl/thing though that just busted in here with ill informed opinions and negative attitude is an example of what NOT to do as a newbie though, and I would not loose sleep if they never came back here again.

Hmm... Interesting, reading through all of this and seeing human relations fails all over the place:rolleyes:

People should be aware that this isn't that heated of a statement. The failing of it is Slitza not elaborating or giving enough context for anyone to agree or disagree. I'd say you'd really be better of being clear and not leaving things too open to interpretation when making a point.

It got you to join and post.

If it's terrible, leave.

I love you DuckKnuckle, but that was probably the worst response. Why? Well, it's defensive to an alarming degree, it closes down the possibility of an engaging discussion (remember, it's not like this is the first time this discussion in particular has happened on the forum), in any case it's the equivalent of saying, "You don't need to like or agree with it, you can just GTFO."

Can you suggest a better way to lure participation from new or inactive members? I'm sure the guys in charge would love to hear it.

This is a better response since it opens or urges discussion even if MetalSoup disagrees.

In any case, that's what I see.

P.S. My intention is not to offend or side with anyone, just noting things I noticed in this entire "debacle"

tl;dr newbs/post-newbs and regulars alike need to be aware of better ways to communicate. Plain and simple.

See, you do care. :p

Yet you were the most irritating, obnoxious person ever :p

I agree with the OP we need half and half competitions where voting or something is only required, but it won't be a huge prize like you get with the activity competitions.

Objection! I put it to you that it is common cause that E-Soup is a MyGaming treasure. Even old Slick thinks he's cool ;).

Are you offering to sponsor a prize? :D

Seriously though, I'll take it up with management. No promises. The budget is a little tighter than it's been before.
