Windows 10's prices are unveiled

so at the moment windows 10 is cheaper that windows 7 home premium and windows 10 pro is R400 more than windows 7 professional.. so if you want the Pro version, buy windows 7 pro and just upgrade.

Is there any info on what the "subscription" fee is going to be like? Coz apparently they going on a yearly subscription fee basis?

Yes. If you don't upgrade during the first year, you have to pay for the upgrade (still no subscription).

O ok i see... I was under the impression that if you did the upgrade your first year was free, and that they were going to a yearly subscription model after that...

When they announced windows 10 and said all copies of windoes 7 and 8 etc would get a free upgrade, there was some talk of even non genuine copies getting the upgrade, which made sense to me at the time because i thought it was a subscription thing... Anyway...

Thanks for setting things straight in my cheesey moon world :p

thank GOD they did not make Windows 10 a "Freemium" OS with a dicey subscription model. having said that, i'm still a little puzzled as to the business thinking behind providing the upgrade for free. what's their game ??

They want everyone on windows 10 for 1 specific reason.

Windows 10 app store.

This is where Microsoft will make most of its money from end users. Think about it, the more people you have using windows 10 the more people will use the app store which in turn will get more developers to develop for/sell on the app store. On top of that Microsoft already has quite a few successful apps and they'll be charging a sub for those apps.

Example: Office 365 (Fantastic software)
They'll sell you a license and you'll have to renew it on a yearly basis.

Just 1 of many examples.

Im still confused as to offering pirated versions the free upgrade... I dont know if they want people to see that the OS is that good and try to show people that they should support it? I think a lot of people that are running pirated windows dont actually know that its pirated... This way they do get everyone on a level playing field...

Pirates are getting it for free for 1 year, after that they'll have to buy a legit copy.
Not sure how Microsoft plan on enforcing it though.

The whole world is becoming subscription based.
Sooner or later you won't be able to buy anything software related, you'll end up having to buy a license and having to renew it but you'll never actually own it.

Same goes for hardware, there will come a time where you won't own a personal computer, you'll most likely rent/subscribe to a cloud based setup for all your pc needs (Looking far into the future here).

I work doing 3D renders, and all our software has gone subscription based... You can buy it outright, but they have made it so expensive to, and so cost effective and consumer friendly to be on a subscription. I must say though, its way better to get the new software as its released with a permanent support staff there to answer all your questions all day...

I dont think the subscription base is a bad model at all... I would be quite happy if windows went this way, I would buy a copy anyway...

The free upgrade is permanent. The 1 year refers to "you must claim your free upgrade within 1 year " , if you snooze, you lose. I think it is probably also to entice corporates/IT Depts to step on it and not let users wander around with Windows 7 still.

Kicking off the consumer-focused Windows 10 event in Redmond on Tuesday, January 21, Microsoft operating system chief Terry Myerson announced that current users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to upgrade to the new operating system for free as long as they do so within one year of Windows 10's launch. Once you’ve claimed the upgrade, it's permanent, and Microsoft will keep you updated for the supported lifetime of the device.

Microsoft is aiming at subscription based software, but only in the far future. Although Windows 10 will still be a one time purchase (full time use) the same can not be said for the ones coming after that.

I have a feeling we will see Windows as a service as a extra choice for the first couple of years but in say 10 years time this might change. After all for a business it makes more sense to rent long term than to buy new every year.

The only concern I have about cloud based service is the South African internet connectivity.
I sure hope we have the international definition of broadband at affordable prices by the time everything goes network based.

Buy Windows 8.1 for R 480 because I am a student then... I can get Windows 10 for free!? I will definitely do that!
