You are getting a student price. There is no such thing as a "Student Edition". It's the same as any other Windows 8.1 Pro.

Anyone have a solid idea of the significant differences between Win10 Home and Win10 Pro editions? As an average user with average needs should I be arsed to look at a way of upgrading my standard 8.1 installations to 8.1 Pro in order to take advantage of Pro features in Win10?

I ain't a student but reckon I could get verification for Student Pro version as a faculty member via the college I do some part-time lecturing at. So assume R480 versus a 8.1 to 8.1 Pro Pack (which I can't find on the MSSA store site anyway.)

Windows 10 Home is the consumer-focused desktop edition. It offers a familiar and personal experience for PCs, tablets, and 2-in-1s. Windows 10 is also coming to the Xbox, giving games and gamers access to the Xbox Live gaming community, enabling the capture and share of gameplay and giving Xbox One owners the ability to play their Xbox One games from any Windows 10 PC in their home.

Windows 10 Mobile is designed to deliver the best user experience on smaller, mobile, touch-centric devices like smartphones and small tablets. It has the same Windows apps that are included in Windows 10 Home, as well as the new touch-optimized version of Office.

Windows 10 Pro is a desktop edition for PCs, tablets, and 2-in-1s. It is similar to Windows 10 Home, but offers many extra features to meet the needs of small businesses.

Windows 10 Enterprise builds on Windows 10 Pro, adding advanced features designed to meet the demands of medium and large organisations. Active Software Assurance customers in Volume Licensing can upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise as part of their existing Software Assurance benefits.

Windows 10 Education builds on Windows 10 Enterprise, and is designed to meet the needs of schools – staff, administrators, teachers and students. This edition will be available through academic Volume Licensing, and there will be paths for schools and students using Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro devices to upgrade to Windows 10 Education.

Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise is designed to deliver the best customer experience to business customers on smartphones and small tablets. It will be available to our Volume Licensing customers.

There will also be versions of Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise for industry devices like ATMs, retail point of sale, handheld terminals, industrial robotics, and Windows 10 IoT Core for small footprint, low-cost devices like gateways.

Thanks Isengard. Read that article, and others very similar. All say pretty much the same thing "....Windows 10 Pro is a desktop edition for PCs, tablets, and 2-in-1s. It is similar to Windows 10 Home, but offers many extra features to meet the needs of small businesses."

My question really is what are these mystical "many extra features"? And are they worth the bother of going from Home to Pro, or are we PR-speaking again?

Just checked out that Student Offer, the price is quite attractive. Paying R480 if you are a student vs R2640 if you're not a student. Luckily my wife is studying part time at Tuks, so I will check tonight if we can use her Tuks email address to qualify for the deal.

Otherwise paying R1500 for the normal Windows 8 is still a lot of cash.

Wonder if I can still get it at student price, all I know is this is the final windows so might as well get it.
But if I'm not mistaken the free upgrade will be valid until the lifetime of the hardware, so not sure if it's a good idea to install it with old hardware.

Or that's how I understand it at least.

Things like being able to join domains and larger networks. Nothing that you would ever really use as a home user.

I'm assuming if you buy Windows on the Microsoft Store, you have to download the setup file? Do they give you an ISO that you can burn onto a DVD so you can install the OS from a boot disk or what?

You get a tool that downloads the files and it allows you to create a bootable ISO yes. :)

Bought the student offer, currently downloading. No idea where it is downloading to or anything, it's just downloading. I just hope it doesn't want to install Windows immediately after it finishes downloading.
I'd like to write the ISO to DVD so I can format my drive and do a clean install.

I've never downloaded Windows before but with most other Microsoft products they normally have two downloads. One that's a self installer and one that's an ISO. Now I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but...

Like I said earlier, the downloader will allow you to create a bootable ISO once it has completed the download. This is how I installed mine.
