The Elder Scrolls Online

I'm also thinking about picking this up on PC tomorrow but as someone who doesn't really like MMO's Im not sure if I should. Is it worth it if I plan to play solo only? I'm a big fan of the universe and this is as close to a new TES game as we're gonna get for the foreseeable future but I don't want to buy it and then find out it's too much like other MMO's I've tried and not enjoyed that much.

Of all the MMOs i've played, this game is almost TOO solo friendly, i actually felt like they got halfway with Elder Scrolls 6 and decided to convert it to an MMO midway . It has a gigantic campaign to play through, actually it has 3 gigantic campaigns to play through (each faction has its own campaign and their zone content almost never overlap!) and most of the content is Skyrim-like questing on your own. There are group dungeons , similar to what you'd get in WoW at the end of each "act" or "zone" , which is the only place where i remotely felt i needed to be in a group.

That said, i do think the game is a tad dumbed-down compared to Skyrim (for obvious reasons). So the combat is alot more arcady/actiony (i actually preferred it over skyrim combat) and the class/skill options look very simplistic , but actually is pretty open ended and gets complicated later on. Despite picking a class at the beginning, you can actually make a Heavy Armor-two-handed-sword-wielding-sorceror or a fireball-throwing-cloth-wearing-templar. I remember i wasted way too much reset-money to change my builds.

There are these "quick dungeons" , similar to a cave/dungeon in Skyrim, where you do sometimes need a group for an "elite" mob, but odds are you will find other players in the dungeon already . Back in the day, you would reach the final boss, only to find he is already dead with 10 other players hovering over him waiting for a respawn (so it can break some immersion here) . So it's very informal type of grouping with this.

The "official" dungeons, is same as WoW dungeons, where you need to find a group and works like any other MMO dungeon, although they are pretty optional to the campaign story line.

In fact, alot of the main story missions you can not group up anyway. I think they sorted out some of the issues with bringing in buddies to help with a campaign quest, but when i played it, you were pretty much forced into your own little instance during campaign/story missions (including the boss fights) .

The multiplayer aspect only really starts to come into play from lvl 50 onwards. The "elite" or "veteran" zones are lvl 50+ content , this is where you start needing buddies to group up with to do the content. However, you can here choose to do the solo campaigns of the other 2 factions (it becomes a little like Diablo, you can play the other campaigns scaled to your level ).

The PvP zone in the middle, you can solo happily there if you want to, it is pretty much like GuildWars2s WvWvW / Siege zones , you pop in, join some zerg-group and take down castles...although unlike GW2, the PvP zone is alot more like a fixed zone with little towns and quests (which you can do on your own) ..the zone status will remain in tact (so if you leave it and return 30 minutes later, it will most likely still be the same zone).

Anyway, i'm going to replay this game on console, game is releasing tomorrow *rubs hands eagerly*.

Cool thanks for the informative reply man. I'm almost convinced I will get it now, will just watch a couple of videos tonight to help make up my mind. I don't have anything against playing with other people per se, but I am definitely more of a SP gamer.

Me too, hence i distinctly remember i almost never felt compelled to group up in this game. I only grouped for the odd dungeon run IF i felt like it, but for the most part there is so much normal/solo content you can level deep into the veteran levels without ever needing to group up. Most of the content that are in the open world that are considered "2-man/3-man" type of stuff, is usually doable with "just show up at the spot and help whoever is there" setup, no need to formally group etc.

I actually think it's quite a challenge to unlock the entire elder scrolls continent with 1 character. You can only access the other factions' zones if you actually follow their campaigns..and the only way to do that is to
lvl 1-50 --> main faction campaign (the central story effectively ends here at lvl 50ish)
lvl 50+ -> do the next faction campaign (scaled to lvl 50+)
lvl 50++ --> do the final faction campaign (scaled to lvl 50++ )

Alternative is to roll 3 characters and play each to lvl 1-50 , but then you don't have the continent unlocked on 1 character ;)

Of course, the campaign is no match for Witcher 3 campaign, but i did feel it was pretty well done (lots of voice acting, in-game video clips and alot of lore references that not even Skyrim really covered).

Awesome thanks man, definitely sounds like something I can enjoy. Will make my decision tonight after watching a few more videos and reading some reviews.

Looks cool but I'll need to buy a new internet before I can partake. Really enjoyed the predecessors!

Well u don't need fast internet to play the game. anything round 1mbps should be sufficient.

I need to do some research on the console releases. I wonder if the xbox/ps4 will be on separate servers of combined?

Speed isn't the problem, cap is. I only have 10 gigs a month and the PS4 is chowing that quite quickly. I've been trying to get fibre installed now that im a home owner but it's either really expensive or Fibrehoods just aint getting back to me.

I don't see why they wouldn't combine them, unless its a concern relating to bandwidth. People do do strange things though.

It is definitely seperate from PC, not sure if PS4/XB1 is combined though.

I know back in 2013 when console was delayed, they said it will be 3 seperate environments (XB360/PS3/PC).

This has to be 1 of the best breakdowns i read on the game! Someone get that man a bells!!

Look me personally, i cant get enough of the game and look forward to playing every day!

Damnit this character delete cooldown is annoying. I have 8/8 slots used and waiting for a delete. The character I'm enjoying the most is my bosmer nightblade with destruction staff.

wowzers 8/8 slots used!! I have only reserved a few names and that's it lol.

so last night I started the PvP grind to buy my Cyrodil ring set. I have got my healer to the point where I have awesome HoTs and can do some nice DPS in-between, so now I want to take that even further. But good grief did I get owned... I really need to work on a PvP build and gear.

If anyone buys the disc version on PC, please post the size of the patch here.

Um if u buying the disc version only now, chances are good u will be downloading a good 20gb. Sadly ESO doesn't do delta updates, so in other words if they want to update 1 line in a file, instead of just updating the file, a whole new file is downloaded. You probably better off just downloading the full client straight from their site.

Surely the physical copy should have some of the updates on the disc already? Why else would they release a new disc version? I bought the disc version of Tamriel Unlimited which came out today, not the original disc version which launched a while ago.

Oooooh, I didn't know they released the PC addition as well. Chances are still good there is a sizable update, my guess is at least 5gb. There has been a lot of changes/improvements lately.

I don't really mind the size of the update (have uncapped), but I would like to at least create my character tonight. If it's 5GB or less I should be able to do it before going to bed tonight. Otherwise I'll have to wait until tomorrow I guess.
