Aion - General Discussion

I was so looking forward to Aion, but I kind of feel cheated. A WoW wanna-be game with very little to offer otherwise, and in some cases less than WoW.

The first thing that bugged me the post installation update which, by default, is a trickle download. Of course you can force it download at full speed by clicking the "Play Now" button, but that I only figured out after waiting for 2 hours for 9mb.

After the update was done the real frustration began. The dammed game loaded up in Korean, an no matter which way you changed the settings in the launcher it still stayed Korean. Turns out that you have to make sure that everything on the PC (region, time, language) wise should be set to UK before you start the installation. It took another 24mb language pack download download to sort that out and a uninstall and reinstall of the launcher.

Then the big disappointment. I was in a queue and had to wait for my first time to play, and when I started it was nothing more than WoW on steriods.

To be fair, I am only lvl 6 now, and there is a still a lot of content to be seen (I hope), I can only hope that the high level gaming is not as "forced" into a direction as the low level quests and terrain.

Well, I'll check things out till next month, maybe it will grow on me by then, but yeah, it is light years from what I expected and hoped for.

All of your points are valid - when not taking into account the fact that it's the birth of a new MMO. One can't expect servers to cope right away. It's only been 2 days.

You can do lvl 1-9 in an evening ... it's only once you've ascended and see the truly epic capital city and experience flight & gliding that you realize just how immensely awesome this game is.

People shouldn't see it as a WoW derivative, which they do anyway, but rather as a Guild Wars improvement.

killing those mau scratchers off in the noob area was not so fun with 20 other odd people wanting their heads too :p

You can always change channels [1-10] to see if another one is less populated. It works well for getting quest respawns without too much contention.

Thanks for all the updates, I might give this a try when I get back into SA.

Question: Anyone playing this on a shaped adsl connection (like Afrihost perhaps :D )? What is latency like?

It is sort of a WoW derivative, if you really think about it - it's closer to thats anyways than it is to Guildwars, especially in terms of play mechanic. However, it looks light-years better. WoW is a bit too cartoony for my taste.

With respects to content - I can't really compare it to WoW since I never really spent time on WoW. There's plenty to do though if you don't really feel like questing - I'm busy learning tailoring at the moment ... slow process that it is.

With regards to queues - I'm expecting this to become less of an issue as things move forward. It's not in any company's best interests to have an insane amount of servers running in case turnout is lower than expected. I'm fairly sure more servers will be brought online in the near future - I'm actually surprised that the queues were much shorter than I expected them to be - the population per server has been increased, evidently. And so far, while a lot of the guys like to make mention of how long they had to wait, I don't find very many griping about it.

Longest queue I've been stuck in? 51 minutes. But since I was expecting it, and I had other things to do anyways, I started the launcher and let it run. Other than that I've missed them mostly, I'm usually in first time.

As far as I know WoW had queues in the beginning as well - the game is almost a decade old already, so obviously they've been able to iron out most of the snags. I think NCSoft have done a sterling job so far (OK, the Korean language thing was something they shouldn't have overlooked) - so spend a little more time with the game before you start spouting negatives. I get enough of the "Oh WOW is better than this" lines in the game.

You have 30 days. Use them well.

800ms on AfriHost ... it didn't pose a problem for me.

You will get buttraped with latency the second you step into your capital city.

HUNDREDS of people running all around - not to mention the absolutely breathtaking architecture...

Only to have them respawn right behind you once everyone runs down the path leaving you asking WTF?

lol, well i camped there at the bottom close the the cart, there spawns 3 in a row after each other and they were well timed. you can get all three if you quick :D

i still say compared to hellgate and age of conan launch, aion is a lot better with only being to popular having us stuck in slow patching, registration and cues.

My problem being I had to complete quests down in the Canyon lol. So I had to go through anyway.

But it's over now :D

Except...does anyone know where the Green Power Generator thing is?

I was in a queue tonight that said i'd be waiting an hour ... then I got disconnected. When I reconnected, I was 1st time.

Is this game really worth the R100 a month?

I always ask things like:

Do you not mind '*grinding' in games?
Would you be able to spend more than 10hrs a week playing?

If yes to those questions than this game, or any MMORPG's may suite you.

*Grinding - Doing a repetitious task over and over example - like an Action RPG like Diablo II performing the same actions ad nauseam.*

OK, I am seriously considering choosing Spiritmaster now that in a forthcoming patch, Spiritmaster pets will be allowed to fly.

Oh, and more European servers are coming :D

I was kinda expecting that :)

With regards to the disconnection ... there was some issue with the NCSoft servers - Guildwars disconnected me at exactly the same time. Several of the other people in my alliance as well, from all over (UK, Norway, you name it).

Yes ... I generally wait out the queues by getting in a bit of Guildwars game time :p

Wonder if they will just levitate, or if they're going to get wings as wel?
