Putting myself in your shoes:
1. Distance sat (sitting) from screen?
2. Future-proofing.
3. Will an extra 10"(es) matter (assuming the 55" is a FHD)? Pun unintended.
Personally I hit up 4K, smaller in size but greater in pixel density - assuming the PC I want to use it with can actually utilise 4K comfortably.
1. Normal seating at a pc during game playing, queen sized bed distance at night for watching movies
2. Main idea
3. Not really, i can put an additional 800 bucks for a 49" UHD ( http://www.dionwired.co.za/tv-blu-ray-satellite/lg-49-uhd-led-tv.html )
Pc not 4k ready yet, but will be in september
I would go for the bigger TV and wait on the 4K... There is so little content available for it... And the distance u mentioned (queensize bed away) I really dont think it will make a huge difference... A 40" TV i would consider small these days... I recently got a 48" Samsung and I can honestly say I would like bigger...
Whats the price difference in the 40" 4K and 55" FHD?
I have no expierience with 4K screens/monitors/graphics card, so this is based on stuff found on Google.
Just make sure of the refresh rates. I checked the 49" one and from searching it looks like the TV is up to 100Hz (10ms). Most 4K monitors I've looked at show a 5~1ms response time. Then I also read that some 4K TV's only support 30Hz (33.3ms) at 4K resolution over HDMI.
YMMV
Do your homework before splashing out close to R10k.
