Had the same issue when reinstalling Windows 10 on my brand new laptop. Decided to factory reset to Windows 10 in order to get OS on the mSATA SSD, subsequently bricked the machine (but could still get into UEFI, so my Win 8.1 key should be embedded there), reinstalled Win 10 from USB to the SSD and couldn't activate it anymore, even after retrieving the Win 8 key from UEFI. Decided "screw that" and just bought a new key online from Microsoft. Quick, easy and now I have a valid Win 10 key for the machine if things go pear shaped.

Yes they are the same.

Windows 10 uses a method which looks at your hardware so if you didn't click the Windows icon on the bottom and apply it won't register.

My 3 laptops one with Windows 7 home single language, Windows Vista Business and Windows 8.1 home single language all got the same Windows 10 key when they upgraded.

Interesting! MS support wanted access to my device which I didn't have on hand. I'll give them a call ob Monday.

I was told by the support tech that 2 things cause win 10 to not activate after update..
1. A Hardware component changed
2. Win 8 was not registered prior to update

My windows was activated online and I have not changed any hardware on the device. :?
Right now the watermark isn't bothering me but rather get it sorted before it does. lol
I have a case number so hopefully it won't be a long process when I do call them.

When you say online was that by using the icon in the taskbar?

You had to activate via the windows icon in the taskbar so that is probably why it failed in the first place.

That link explains how to get the windows 10 icon. I had that. That's how I upgraded.

So you didn't use the ISO then? Maybe try reinstalling Windows 8.1 and redoing it with the ISO instead if you haven't already

Had to do that on this client's machine I reinstalled today.
 
I got the notification at work today that I can upgrade, but now have to wait, since Pastel doesnt work with 10.

Ah I hope it doesn't come to that. I'm going to wait to hear what MS support has to say before reloading. I tried calling them yesterday but I cut the call after waiting for an hour or so.
 
i did a clean instal with the gf laptop. It was a bad idea... Eventually i had to re-install her previous windows and run through the iso over again while the PC was on. It's working great now, no issues what so ever
 
So far I am happy, just have this weird issue, might be me just typing wrong, but very often, when typing in my password the first time upon starting windows, it would say I am offline, my password is incorrect. Then typing it again, it works. But perhaps I am just my normal clumsy self when typing.

But other than that, much happiness with Win 10. Wife also liking it. Next, my oldish laptop....

That is odd, I changed from password to pin and it logs me in instantly.

Hi

Seeing your post by chance now. Have you tried to set your bios to factory mode or "safe" settings. This might force windows to re-establish a new interrupt request list.

Let me know.

Best thing about windows 10 so far is the boot time - from power off to login screen in a whole 3 seconds (SSD involved)!!

Onto the not so good things:
No drivers for my mobo's built-in wifi yet :(
Also random infinite auto-detecting loop of my Logitech wireless headies :(
Logitech F710 drivers not recognized, used the xbox 360 drivers as a workaround (works surprisingly well)

Seems like wireless devices and Windows 10 don't play nice together O_o

Try using the Win 8.1 wifi drivers?

My motherboard has no Win10 drivers (Asus P67 Sabertooth) available yet, but so far the Win 8.1 drivers are working fine. My wife's Asus Z77 V-Pro has Win10 drivers available, so depending on the age of your motherboard, it might be a while (or never).
