Nvidia GPUs do not support DX12 Asynchronous Compute/Shaders.

Mr. Nice Guy
Well according to Reddit posts anyways. I haven't been following any of this and I remember reading an article about AMD outperforming Nvidia in DX12 benchmarks. I hope there isn't a thread about this already.

The short answer is that if you intend to buy a GPU for the next few years then you should avoid Maxwell as most games in the next few years will be DX12 and Async Compute is very important for perfomance. If you have plenty of disposable income and will upgrade in the next year or two when there are far more DX12 games then this may not matter to you but most people here are not in a situation like that.

*edit*

I bought my GTX 970 with 4gb and dx12 written on the side of the box. It turns out both were wrong.

Well that could be quite shit if turns out to be true. I have seen some DX12 benchmarks and the Nvidia cards performing poorly compared to the AMD ones, but if it is just a driver issue or straight up hardware, I don't know.

Haha, that comment!

Looks like my R9-280x will stay just a while longer in my gaming PC... :p For Nvidia focused games I'll stick with my laptop (with a 970m), as it's good enough for most games right now (rocking Mad Max and MGS V on ultra without a hitch).

Would you recommend the R9-280x ?

If you want a biased opinion, why not? I've had it now for just over a year and I haven't struggled to play anything yet. Downside is the lack of PhysX (which very few games support anyway), but you can force it to run on the CPU in some games (like Borderlands 2).

Price-wise there are better options available these days though, seeing as it comes dangerously close to GTX970 territory. But lets see how DX12 pans out - maybe AMD can rule the roost again in a year from now, even with older cards.
