Why I dislike Apple products

My SO and the rest of the developers on his team all use Macbooks. He runs Ubuntu at home, but he does all his app development on Mac. His reasoning is that Mac is just very well optimized, support is great and the hardware lifetime is great because it is very carefully laid out and designed. He can get an equivalent laptop for a third of the price, but according to him it's not worth his time to deal with laptops that fail after a year or two of hard use or tech support that jerk you around with the RMA process.

The company seems to be doing really, incredibly well, so I'll take his word for it. :p

I used my iPod on a bedside radio with an iPod dock and it completely eviscerated the battery life. Previously it used to last a week with a lot of use, now it lasts about 3 or 4 hours. I'm not even sure it's worth having the battery replaced so it just stays on the dock permanently now.

yeah it'll probably cost the same as getting a new iPod
 
I dislike Apple products just because the ones I've used never gave me any joy. Like in at all. Longest I've used an Apple device was an iPhone 4, for a grand total of 2 days. I went back to my Galaxy S (original) and sighed the biggest sigh of relief ever.

I find the display a tad small, but if you're into a 12" display, then good on you. On to the storage, 256 GB or 512 GB SSD, not too shabby...and lastly it has a nice 480p webcam. Wait, what? 480p? Why not 720p? It makes no sense. No worries, if you don't really use the camera. Surely you do want to (if you're insane like me) use say an external keyboard, mouse and BluRay writer. Oh, I can't because there are no USB type-A ports. I have to use an ADAPTER?!

So can someone please explain to my why the MacBook is deemed superior to say the Asus G551JW with an Intel i7 4720HQ processor, 16 GB RAM LPDDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4GB DDR3, 1TB 5400 RPM HDD and a 128 GB SSD, Blu-Ray writer, 720p webcam and 3 x USB 3.0 ports? Or even the Dell XPS 13? Acer Aspire V3?

Maybe I don't get it, is there something I'm missing? What am I missing? I'll rant about the iPhone next...

I have worked at '1 of many' publishing companies as the IT tech for many moons. DTP department insisted on Apple MAC on a Windows network. They needed to work with Outlook (So Entourage it was) and they worked on Quark.

O my...what a disaster: Fonts was always an issue on OS9 classic and then moving on to OS10 and not mention file corruptions. Parts were ridiculously expensive although they used the exact same hardware as any other pc. So when a DVD writer conked in, I did not look for an Apple part - I just order from Rectron or whatever. It was not just font corruptions on the MAC but every time the company decided to change to a different company for printers it was a battle getting them to print using the correct font or showing the exact color as was designed on Adobe or Quark.

Outlook on MAC at that time just struggled using Exchange...anyway. It has got a 1 button mouse with sometimes impossible Apple key commands to press. Almost like playing Twister with your fingers.

Best part was - you plug a Microsoft mouse in a MAC and all the buttons (including the scrolling wheel) works a treat!

So the head of the DTP department needed to go maternity leave and wanted to work from home - hence she needed a laptop. So she wanted a Mac book Pro. The company said it was too expensive and so I got her a fantastic Acer laptop with better specs and screen.

When she came back from maternity leave, she changed the whole DTP department over to normal PC. (Slowly but surely)

Bottom line: Apple is a nice to look at, quality product. It is just not meant for our market. Most people I know that bought a Mac or asked me to buy one for them - ended up loading Windows on it because now they need Pastel on it and other software that is just not meant for OS.

To me, Apple products are bought for status and not functionality, ease of use or performance. There are loads of products out there that outshines Apple by miles. (It still looks gorgeous though and I still won't touch it)
 
iTunes is a pain. If I pay for a song, I should be able to do anything I want with it. Put it on multiple devices.....even non-apple devices. I understand what they are trying to acheive with such tight constraints, but it gets to be quite annoying. Plus the new Apple Music platform is a joke. It's trying to be spotify while screwing with your original music library. And your songs either get stuck on repeat, or you have to add playlists to the 'up next' section over and over again for it to keep playing through.....instead of being able to just hit a repeat button. And you can't seem to shuffle through your entire library anymore, which...let's face it...sometimes we want to do. Or at least have the option to do. For something that is supposed to be so user friendly, Apple Music IS NOT!
 
Iphones suck! You can't even send a bluetooth file to another phone from an Iphone. People mostly get them to just show off.

My previous phone was a G2, and before that I had an S4, both of which were meant to have been a big upgrade from my 4s. I hated every minute with those plasticky awful phones and the G2 had a terrible wash effect in the camera. The 5s gives me the most consistently high quality pics and the build quality is excellent, plus it has much better integration with music/audio apps and peripherals. I'd like to give Android another try maybe with a Note4 or something. But in the office a lot of the Android guys have moved to the iPhone 6.
 
Apple makes stuff that looks expensive and charge accordingly, yes the software is straightforward and easy to use once you get used to it I suppose, I however hate the so called apple ecosystem, I don't like the vibe and attitude of Apple as a company, they feel like a bunch of snake oil salesmen.

Macs can't go to the beginning or end of a line with a single key combination

Macs can't re-size windows by all corners and edges but only from the bottom right corner (until 10.8)
Macs don't tell you what operating system you have (they give #s , but not the Lion, etc., name)

As someone who has to work with a Mac (and 2 banks of Ipads (about 60)...don't get me STARTED on lack of volume licencing of Apple in SA)on a bi-weekly basis at 1 of the schools, I can completely agree with this list and more. Intuitive it fuckin isn't... And then I constantly get bombarded with teachers going "can i just copy my music from here to here?" No. you bought an Apple product, give up all hope of using it like any other industry-standard storage device
