Head tracking with smartphone

Have guys ever gotten tired of having to toggle the look around button on on elite dangerous, arma, etc but you don't want to spend money on a trackIR camera? well i have good news for you. All you need is an android or iOS smartphone and you can have head tracking too!

I found this the other day

All you have to do is download a program onto your PC and Phone (Which isn't big at all), Attach your smartphone phone to your head and then set it in :)

Here's a clip of it in action

It works... in some cases quite well as well.

But I have tried it in Elite and there is a clear response lag behind my movements. Sometimes it takes up to 2 seconds to respond to movement. It's not bad, seeing as it's free. But I would rather go for something else. There are some amazing custom tracking kits out there.

....I don't get the point of this

Lets use an example in aram3.. If you are flying a helicopter and you want to land in a tight spot to pick up some people you would usually have to hold in the alt button and use your mouse to look around and then you wouldn't be able to control the heli with the slight mouse movements.. With the headtracking you will be able to look around you while doing the fine movements to get into all the tight spaces without letting go of the controls.. This is just the budget option for head tracking.

but.... how do you actually see what you're looking for? the monitor is still stationary....

In most simulators these days you can now control the pilot/soldiers head independantly of his body but to do this you have to use the mouse or HOTAS control on your stick which takes away some gameplay functionality.
With this motion control you retain all control functions and are able to check your flanks etc.

once you get used to it, its stupendously awesome. You can maintain course and still look around for the enemy.
I was hoping Kinect would implement this more in games. But no. cheesey jumping in the lounge games.
