Fallout 4's season pass to usher in new era of DLC abuse

Am I the only that does not agree with this article?

Who cares if we don't know what's gonna be in the season pass? Todd Howard himself said it would include ALL DLC they ever make for the game. If you buy the season pass you obviously want more of the game so I don't see the issue. I've bought a few season passes before and not one of them showed what would be in the season pass when I bought them.

If you don't want to buy it then don't. I know I will, just not right now, but as soon as I have the money I'm buying it.

After fooling around in that whole Settlement aka "SimCity" / "Rust" thing they got going in this game , i think i know where the DLC is going to come from. They can easily do what they did in City:Skylines , add these "building packs" or "material packs" as DLC. Like being able to paint those walls, or build factories or something....should be a big money spinner for the modders too.

Coming Soon : "Neon Light Pack" for $9.99 ;-)
Coming Soon after that : "Wasteland Buggy Pack" for $19.99 , now you can build your very own vehicle!
Coming Soon after that : "Road Constructor Pack" for $9,99 , build your own roads for your vehicle!

..and there your Season pass is done, and they haven't even started with the real DLC ;)

Plenty of people care. We're being sold promises without being told what is being promised. This is not a good thing in any way. If CDProjekt could tell us beforehand what DLC is being included in the Season Pass, then so can Bethesda.

I can't fathom how people will buy something with no idea of the content. Might as well send Bethesda your $60 for their next game now.

Well I'm basing my viewpoint on the great quality of content we got with Fallout 3 and NV. Sure Skyrim did not have the best DLC, but it's not Fallout.

I don't give a shit how many small packs of lights/armour/whatever they release as part of the season pass. The fact remains that the season pass will include any and all DLC they release for the game and I'm confident that they will release substantial DLC's similar to what F3 and NV had.

My other argument still stands as well. You don't have to buy it if you don't want to. You could wait for them to announce what's in it or you can buy the DLC individually as they come out. You could even decide to buy only the ones that interest you or wait until everything is out and then buy the season pass. The point is that it is completely optional.

Also, technically the Witcher did not have a season pass. It had free DLC and an expansion pass. [emoji14]

Problem is , there is a slippery slope. People buy these Season Passes blindingly and Devs will start develop their games for DLCs from the start , kinda like "Day 1 DLC" .

Example where things go wrong: Total War: Warhammer . Guess what, the 5th faction (Chaos) is a DLC, the game is not even out yet and they are doing this. Stripping the game of content and putting it in the DLC (be it pre-order or season pass) . It's like Blizzard giving you StarCraft 3 and saying Protos is now part of the Season Pass.....

So in a way, Bethesda not even knowing what to put in the DLC is a good thing, because it means they didnt intentionally strip out parts of the game to fill up the season pass ....but if everyone just buys the season pass "anyway" , how can this be good for anyone?

It means game prices will become $100 for the same content very soon.

I understand your point and would probably also be pissed of a game is not out yet and devs announce a faction in the game is DLC only. Blizzard did pretty much just that for Starcraft 2 IMO. They split the main game into three seperate full priced games. I understand that each faction has it's own campaign which is why it worked like that, but still. Look at older games like the old C & C games. You could play both sides of the war from the start without paying anything extra or waiting for it.

My main issue with this article/column is that it's coming across as if the writer thinks Bethesda is some evil corporation out to get gamers. I honestly don't know what "abusive DLC" is. Like you said, they don't know what they are going to do which is almost confirmation that they didn't cut anything out to sell to us at a later point. This doesn't seem like the work of an evil corporation to me.

Well, if you're willing to give people your money when not even they know what they're selling you yet, then kudos. The idea is ridiculous, even if it is optional- and I will point out that any purchase in life is optional and if being optional is the only criteria needed to dismiss criticism, we wouldn't be able to criticize any products, ever.

And Bethesda is not your friend. You might like their games, but read up on the company's track record. They are right up there with EA, Activision and Ubisoft.

Wonderful article!!! Absolutely brilliant column, and just what I wanted to read here on MyGaming!!!

Then I shall endeavor to continue. But if the coffee runs out, all bets are off.

Even if Bethesda was the best of companies with nothing but the gamer's well being at heart, it still provides incentive to those less likely to give a shit about us the same idea.

When one publisher gets away with something, so to will the others follow.

I see where you guys are coming from, but I really don't see why this is such a big issue. It's not like I am giving some random person R10 000 for the promise of something great which even they don't know what exactly it is. I enjoyed the DLC for Fallout 3. I also enjoyed the DLC for Fallout NV. I am also really enjoying Fallout 4 and I'm pretty confident I will enjoy its DLC, whatever it may be. Therefore I am going to buy the season pass, so I can get all the DLC they release for the game as soon as it's out, and hopefully at a lower price point than each DLC would be individually. If they add 20 different light packs, armour packs, food types for settlement or whatever I wouldn't care because at the end of the day it would still be more content for something I really enjoy, even with all its faults.

I never said or even thought that Bethesda (or any dev) is my friend. I actually kind of "hate" them for not letting Obsidian develop Fallout 4 [emoji14]. They just happen to make games that I enjoy which I why I will support them. I honestly don't give a shit about "politics" regarding developers and/or publishers. If I enjoy a game I'll play it, regardless of what "evil" thing the dev/publisher has done/is doing.
