So my 8600GT packed up...what to get?

Hi friends,

My 8600GT is giving up on life and it's time I get myself a new gfx card.

My current setup is this:

E7400 Intel chip, normal P45 mobo, 4GB-800 ram,
screens: 1x17" CRT (DVI->VGA converter); 1x32" LCD TV as main monitor (DVi->HDMI cable output)

So in essence nothing fancy, but capable of handling most games just fine.

What I need is a PCi-Express card around the +-R1200 mark that has 2xDVI output on it.

I'm thinking of going for the Nvidia 9800GT and I've received a quote for it @ R1100.

What would you guys recommend, considering that I have not read through any proper reviews yet?

This is the quote I got:

HIS Radeon HD 4850 ICEQ4 1GB DDR3 PCI-EXPRESS = R 1,732.80 (Incl VAT)

VS

Nvidia 9800GT = R1,183.00 (Incl VAT)

Where do you get an HD4580 for R1.2k?

So is there a difference in quality of chipsets i.e. XFX etc. in the HD4850 or are they all pretty much on par?

Do you guys have experience with ordering hardware via take2?

My Humble opinion goes as so:
If you're not buying TOP end parts from NVIDIA, buy Ati.

Weird statement? It may seem, but let me explain.
Nvidia Make quality TOP end products, the rest are low-yield silicon and low-build-quality parts, with problems like poor mounting materials and what not, giving them a shorter than usual usage life.

Ati, work a bit differently, but effectively, not compromising so much on the build-quality of the boards and open it up for OEM's to make their own.

Bottom line, on a budget buy ATi, only buy NVIDIA for HighEnd stuff.
I've bought several entry and then mid level products from Nvidia - all of which eventually died, all of which after some googling, found that it's cause of Bad Material X on the board or Poor thermal Y on the board etc. -- well thats my opionion anyway . . . GL enjoy your ATi board - they're pretty good

Mosty XFX stuff is overclocked somewhat. But they make excellent chipsets. Never had any issue with take2 before :)

Warranty Returns? Dunno, I never had any issue from them whatever I've bought from them.
Connect3D, is your plain vanilla reference Ati board. It's good stuff :)

Yeah spend a lot there and no problems so far, only the out of stock thing that gets irritating.

Warranty returns are cool my friend bought a gpu there and one of the capacitors fried so it fell under the warranty so I asked for it to be checked at and a week later my friend had a new gpu. Since it was not his fault he did not have to pay for shipping.

You can also just read up on it on there help page.

If you could get to zones they selling the 4870 for R1200 and the 4850 for R900 cash for the 512meg.
I see they don't have those on there website but my bro got a 4870 there for just under 1.2
