HTC Vive VR headset was delayed because of "a very, very big technological breakthrough"

There's a GIF for that
You might be disappointed that the HTC Vive has been pushed back to an April 2016 release, but the reason for the delay is exciting... even if it is vague.

Gutted about the delay of your VR adventures? Stick some technology on your ears instead, and read PCGamesN's list of best headsets.

At the Vive Unbound developers forum in Beijing, CEO Cher Wang revealed that Valve and her team made "a very, very big technological breakthrough" with the headset.

This breakthrough was apparently so significant that they decided to scrap the original version and focus on building the consumer kit with this mysterious breakthrough applied.

"We shouldn't make our users swap their systems later just so we could meet the December shipping date," said Wang (via Engadget).

I'm betting on the Vive. I believe the release date for the Rift is "early 2016"

I know there have been plenty of developer kits been sold for the Rift, but I've never actually seen or heard of anything for the other makes/models. Surely they too must have dev kits?

Well it's not like you're following VR. Youtube is full of Vive videos, and there are already a lot of games being developed for it.

So the big breakthrough is called "Tron mode". And it doesn't exactly rock my world, but I guess it's handy. They fitted a camera to the front and if you double-tap a button, the Vive displays a wire-frame of objects in the real world inside the game world. This helps you to locate an object (or see what it was you just knocked from the table) without removing the headset.
