Netflix officially in SA!

Yeah we shared it last night in TK, but no other forum posts for it. I signed up and had a look at the catalogue. Nothing really special for me, and honestly it's lineup of shows and movies are much worse than Showmax. Hopefully they can add a lot more, but this is not the homecoming of a new king in my books.

I haven't had a look at the catalog as yet, but I'm pretty certain that it will be very limited as everything is when we get it on this end of the world, but it is nice that it is actually available here now, and hopefully they will add more content.

It's definitely still worth using Unotelly for their Dynamo service, to get access to content from all the Netflix regions.

yeah I don't get the hype either. I'll just keep downloading the one or two shows they have I want to watch and in the process save R150 and my cap

Netflix at about R130 pm vs Showmax at R99. Seeing as Showmax is part of Multichoice, it's possible that they have a better line-up of shows than Netflix at the start. They already have access to many different show licences that Netflix doesn't have. And all the people hating Showmax because it's part of Multichoice are petulant children that should start drinking fish oils to get an IQ over 40. There is nothing wrong with Showmax, it's inexpensive, has a large selection of great shows, and a stable platform that they are growing access to.

So here is an interesting solution......WHY NOT BOTH!! For about R220 pm plus a stable uncapped fast internet line of about R800, you can have a huge amount of series and movies in both Afrikaans and English, original shows from USA and South Africa on two really good platforms.

So, if you have access to proper internet speeds and caps, and need some stream services, for the first time in SA you are prettymuch covered without having to deal with VPN's and stuff like that.

With all that said and done, don't expect the same cord-cutting mentality to start in SA as what's currently happening in the USA. Our broadband is below international standard, costs way too much, doesn't offer big enough caps on the packages, and the adoption rate of fixed line internet access is much much lower than most countries in the world. Also, seeing as we are a sport crazy nation, and both Netflix and Showmax don't offer any sport streaming services, means that they will not get the proper adoption rate as one would expect. I expect to see numbers below 500 000 people using either Showmax or Netflix for at least the first 2 years.

Showmax does look cool, and it has HBO shows, which Netflix doesn't. The only issue I have with it is that to watch it on a (non smart) TV, I would have to hook up a PC to the TV. I use the PS and XBox apps to watch Netflix and Hulu, which is very handy.

EDIT: looks like they are working on that though

Well, whether or not you like Netflix, I think it's awesome that we are getting more international services in SA, it can only be good to give the local providers some competition, and hopefully give the whole cable cutting idea a boost here.

I don't care about any of it. I just want to be able to stream sport in HD and I can't find ANYTHING that offers this!

You can stream SuperSport, but only if you have the full DSTV Premium with PVR subscription (or if you know someone who will lend you their login details)

Exactly! And not a fuck am I going to pay >R600pm just watch Premier League.
excuse the french

you can do that..... it might not be completely legal though

Show me the way master, cos I've tried them all. All those "free HD" sports streaming sites is a crock of bullshit, maybe HD on my cell phone. But fullscreen on my 27"? not a fuck! Can't even make out the names on the back of their shirts, let alone their faces.

Why would you want to see their faces?!

Just making a point of how bad the quality is on those "free HD streaming" sites.

Agreed though, the quality is pathetic on those sites... Its ok if im desperate, but i think its actually unbelievable that there isnt a "Netflix of sport" yet...

Think it really comes down to licenses, in my case I'm only really interested in Premier League and hence Sky has the rights to that.

But surely Sky would realise they could make a fortune with a sport streaming service? Sky is a perfect example... I get that DSTV wont do it because they rely so heavily on the subscribers that are only there for the sport... But Sky is a lot bigger than DSTV...

Exactly, and not like I'm wanting a free service, I don't mind paying. I want a service that can offer this, and can offer it in HD.
