Official Star Citizen Thread

I was interested in it a little while ago actually. As I've been spending an awful lot of time in Elite Dangerous and will be getting a HOTAS system as well. After watching a lot of YouTube videos and reading a lot on /r/starcitizen I have decided against it. At least in it's current state I don't believe it's worth it. It also just looks a little too arcade like for me and seems to lack character.

But that's just my 2c from a non owner.

That's exactly how I feel, to me it seems like the game has amazing aesthetics and very accurate mechanics and physics, but it seems like there's not much to do and everyone is just waiting. I might be wrong but I feel the development of the game was approached from the wrong direction in that gameplay isn't the main focus, but wow-factor is?

I didn't get that at all. from what I've seen it looked very arcadey to me

I must have misread something then, or one of the reviewers was a bit overhyped :p

I'm becoming very doubtful of buying the game now - it's set for release late 2016 so maybe it would make sense to grab it just before release to still take advantage of the lower prices as well as being able to buy ships with cash. At the moment the only module is dogfighting right? I might find it more appealing once some of the trading and exploration have found their way into the game, especially if it has some Eve elements to it, like colonising a solar system or a specific planet.

I very much doubt that it will make any 2016 release date for the full game. That date was based on a interview conducted in April 2014... I think you can expect SQ42 in 2016, but not too much more than that.

Well that's disappointing...

not a fan of the HUD either

I was thinking about the HUD, and it looks to be a cool *idea* and may well be immersive and effective when paired with some VR tech, but I struggle to see it working on a screen about a meter away(once again, not out of personal experience).

for me, I don't get the sense of immersion in SC as I do in ED. Even watching the videos, it doesn't look/feel like I'm in a cockpit or piloting a heap of space junk. Instead it feels like I'm in front of a screen. And that's kinda the deciding factor for me, the sense of immersion.

Hey peeps, anyone want to take a stab at convincing me to buy a starter package? I want to know whether gameplay is fair for us South Africans and our massive ping? Also, will this game become as massive and legacy based as WoW or Eve, so the earlier you start the better your gameplay experience will be?

Meh, though i support this game 100%. I wouldn't dive into buying a package atm (With the current exchange rate and large amount of data required for updates).

As for the Experience fellow SA users will get in the PTU i cannot answer, they are using googles servers to do hosting, but if a server will be actually in Africa is a different story. There's also the part where is your machine capable of running the game smoothly.
My specs:-
GTX 780
16 GB Ram
SSD - OS
SSD - Gaming

and im getting 30 fps (Though the game is not optimized as yet), I have been forced to save my money till the game releases then upgrade as the game will take over my gaming life.

As for the Wow and Eve size, don't think so tbh, the game requirements are steep thus pushing alot of mid tier users out of the possibility of playing the game.

Most know I'm a huge proponent of Star Citizen, and have been following its development since mid-2013. Even with all of my fan-boyism though, it still took 18 months of watching and reading before I made my initial pledge in Aug 2014. I'm also an equally strong believer in sensible "buyer beware" practices, especially when it comes to paying for pre-orders, and for "games" that don't actually exist.

On that basis, I fully support the sentiments expressed in the last few posts - if you feel unsure about pledging to SC now (or any game for that matter), don't do it.

That said, couple of points to highlight the state of Star Citizen at the moment:
> We are essentially talking about 2 separate but related games here: Star Citizen is the originally pitched MMO space-sim game. Squadron 42 is the separate single-player campaign/mission-based game that was added to the SC universe once they realised how much money they were raising.

At the moment package pledges will get you access to both. There is talk that the games will be split fairly soon, and that future pledges will be for one or the other. Ultimately you will be able to buy and play one or the other, or both.

SQ42 story, gameplay, etc., similar to many AAA campaign driven games, is being kept under wraps as much as possible at the moment to maintain a little of the "surprise" element. We are being trickle-fed occasional snippets of marketing hype (like the Gillian Andersen clip I posted earlier) as they build up to a release for Squadron 42 "sometime in 2016".

Star Citizen the MMO is not going to be released at the same time. Personally, I'd be pleased with a late-2017 release. However, Star Citizen is what the presently available Alpha release is all about, so...

In terms of the Star Citizen MMO:

> The game is very much in an Alpha state at the moment. SC-Alpha 2.1.0 is on the live servers, 2.1.1 is on the test servers. The devs have loosely committed to trying to release at least one major level patch per month so we're expecting Alpha 2.2 sometime in Feb.

> The alpha release is far from optimized to make the game run as well as we'd like. It's certainly not "unplayable", but it is definitely a alpha-level test release right now. Expect slow frame rates, crashes, weird clipping and graphic issues, huge patch downloads, etc. That said, just because you may have pledged to the game doesn't mean you have to frustrate yourself with sketchy alpha play. Nothing you do in-game now will carry forward to the the final release. There may be some benefit to beta play, but we're a long way away from that point.

> The alpha release is very, very far from being feature complete. There is certainly a lot more available to alpha test players to do than the original Arena Commander dog-fighting module though: test versions of the basic FPS, multi-crew ships, EVA, social environment, revised flight mechanic models, and quantum travel are all in-game now. Arena Commander is still there as the stand-alone dog-fighting and ship racing test environment too.

> As far as server response and concerns about lag are concerned: too early to tell at this stage just how good/bad the final game will be to play in South Africa. CIG are using Google Compute Engine servers and services - we're probably equidistant between the Belgium and Taiwan (or Singapore?, I can't remember) farms, so our mileage may vary significantly.

Here's a very fair and reasoned review of the state of SC from LevelCapGaming. Bare in mind that this clip was made running alpha 2.0. A number of the issues noted in it have since seen improvement in 2.1.

It really all comes down to deciding for yourself whether you're prepared to risk spending $45 now to lock in your access to both Star Citizen and Squadron 42 games sometime in the future. Or if caution is a better option for you and you're okay with possibly having to spend $60 for each of the games separately once you've seen them released and are still interested in playing them.

So Star Citizen and Squadron 42 are going to be released as two separate entities or "games" and marketed as such?

Whoa...

Thanks man, what a response. Thanks for clearing up most of the questions! I think it's very important to remember that the game is in alpha, and there are many things to come. I hope the game lives up to all it's hype and that we can have a massive MyG crew in the universe someday!

Ugh, let me just grab my credit card...

JK, after seeing that video that GregRedd posted, I am a more amped for the game, but in future when exploration, trading, hauling and all those elements come into play.

Edit: Capital ships look jaw-dropping

lol... quite the opposite for me actually, it makes me less interested in it.

meh, each to their own I guess.

But what if you and your gang can attempt taking out a massive cargo hauler like a pack of hyenas on a wildebeest... hey wait a minute, EVE: Valkyrie Much?

That does look good and I am interested in it. But you can do that in Elite as well... haven't attempted it yet, cos I've been too cowardly :p
