The Investor Challenge - Online trading game

So, this is a bit of a left field post and left field "game"

If you have ever wanted to get involved in the stock exchange, buying and trading shares, but don't have the knowledge/guts/money for it, here is your chance of getting some of that action:

The Investor Challenge

No, this is not a spam post, and no, this is not a site that will try and sell you anything. You don't need to pay for anything or spend a cent, so don't worry.

This site is for those that have wanted to learn or train themselves to become traders on the stock exchange. Once registered, your profile is allocated an amount of fake money to start building your stock profile. You can then go and buy any shares as listed on the JSE. This site will refresh the prices and values of shares every 30 minutes or so, so the prices are all up to date and current.

The challenge is to become the most successful trader and top the leaderboard. Here is a quote from the site's creators:

In this contest you are the chairman of an investment club. Together with yourself the club collects R100 000 every month which is deposited into a trading account of which you have total control! You need to invest the funds on behalf of your club members, with the goal being to create as much growth as possible before the end of the year. You will have access to all shares and Exchange Traded funds currently on the JSE, apart from penny shares (shares trading under the R1 per share value).

I know this won't be for everyone, but I'm sure there are some savvy minded forumites that would find interest in this.

Thanks to some good tips, I'm currently sitting on 63rd on the leaderboard.

Interesting, I've been curious but never known enough about this financial jargon. Nice to see/have something to play around with. Thanks for sharing.

Feel exactly the same. I have always been very interested and wanting to learn. but not sure where to start as I do not really have someone to show me the ropes

If you'd like more info on current share info and current JSE listed companies, I would suggest MoneyWeb's Daily Indicators. This page give a lot of information about the companies listed on the JSE, and give some guidance in terms of what the general feeling are for certain shares, and which to buy.

Then, if you need any info on terms you are not familiar with, use Investopedia, best website out there for clarification on terminology used in financial sectors.

And where would be the best place or company to use for starting? When i say I don't know anything, i mean as in nothing! :)

Hey, I myself am only just starting to get to grips with the Markets and Trading. I've always had vague ideas. For educational purposes I started doing this Investor Challenge. The real expert seems to be Talentloos, who is not so talentloos after all.

Ahhh okay! well I am going to keep an eye out and follow you guys and hopefully get into this

I see under the Groups tab there is a mybroadband group. Maybe we can create a MyGaming group and, you know, join that....I'm not really sure what the groups do, but why not??

EDIT

Group created. Join if you want to

What % growth do you guys usually use to indicate or think of selling?

That I'm not sure yet. It would depend on the share. I would hate to sell share midway in their climb, or keep hanging on share for too long and miss their high point. It will depend on what's going on with the company you've invested in.
