RIP router: want to buy a new one

I need your advice please.

It looks as though my old [I have had it ever since I got ADSL and was on a 384k line with a 1Gb cap.] DLink 2640U is to blame for my slow/missing internet [by slow I mean that the line speed was less than what I pay for.] connection over the latter part of the year [Was OK when I tried it with another router.]

I got this quote from a local store [I'm still in East London] yesterday. They currently have the TP-Link TD W8951ND and the NetGear D500-100PES. While the TP Link model is much cheaper at R315.00, the Netgear one [R600] looks to have the least bewildering user interface. [It isn’t as if I am going to be fiddling with advanced network settings-I don’t know what most of the options mean. I am not at the level of competence, and prefer not to be overwhelmed by user interfaces] What do you know about these two brands so far as reliability is concerned?

Thank you.

I like TP-Link as a brand. Haven't had any issues with their products yet and you get some good bang for buck. And I prefer the TP-Link interface to D-Link, but that is a personal preference.
On the otherhand, I haven't had a lot of experience with Netgear but I've always had the impression that they are a bit overpriced.

R315 for the TP-Link W8951ND is an excellent price, btw. Even Uniterm is more expensive (price excl VAT).

Just one thing: Both the TP-Link and Netgear you mention are 150N wireless routers. If you only use it for internet, that would be fine but if you want to stream video locally or copy large files over the wifi connection I would rather look for at least a 300N router. Like this one. (remember, price excl VAT, so that would be ~R445).

Edit: I just saw that your D-Link that bit the dust was a wireless G router, so regardless which router you choose, you will see a big improvement in speed and range.

I had to buy a new router today (due to our water damage at our house). Decided to try a dual-band router and settled upon a TP-Link Archer D2. All I can say is WOW! 5GHz WiFi in a house is awesome. It might just be the infatuation with the new router that I'm experiencing, but everything feels more snappy than the old D-Link that I had. Must be because almost nobody around me is utilising the frequency and I have the whole range all to myself. It finally feels like it's doing my fiber connection justice. :D
