Official Star Citizen Thread

Just a quick heads-up for those tracking this issue...

I mentioned a little while ago, and now it's been made official: Star Citizen and Squadron 42 will be split into two separate packages from 14 February. (A split on Valentine's Day. Oh, the geekish irony there.)

[During] the December livestream, we announced that Squadron 42 and Star Citizen will be split into two separate packages in the near future. To update on this: the split will occur on February 14th. Squadron 42 will be available as either a stand alone game or an optional addon for Star Citizen rather than be included by default. If you want to lock in both games for the lowest possible price, consider pledging before this deadline. You can learn more about Squadron 42, our thrilling single-player adventure, here.

No indication yet of revised pricing for the separate products. Speculation I've seen suggests maybe a starting price point of $45 for either game to begin with (that's what the combined package would cost you now), and that gradully being raised to around the $60 point to coincide with the SQ42 full release. And then something around $30 if you pick up SQ42 as an "addon" for your SC game. That's all pure speculation though.

Also, as posted elsewhere, CIG are running another "Free Fly" week this week:

For the next week, we’ve enabled Free Fly access to all accounts… which means that anyone can jump in to Star Citizen Alpha 2.1.2 today! The Free Fly event gives everyone access to three unique parts of the Star Citizen experience:

Star Citizen Alpha 2.1.2 – Also known as Crusader or the “mini-PU,” this is the nucleus of the world we’re building! Featuring multiple space stations and environments, scripted missions, places to explore and more, Alpha 2.1.2 is your first look at a much larger universe!

Arena Commander – Arena Commander is a ‘game within a game’ that we’ve used to develop our flight mechanics and ship combat balance. Take on human opponents or an AI swarm in single seat fighter.

Social Module – Interact with other players while you explore our first landing zone, ArcCorp! The Social Module is intended as a starting point for our world building.

You can register for an account here to get started. (Remember to use one of the Referral Codes from the OP here to get yourself some bonus game credits if you do decide to purchase a game package - codes can only be used on new account creation and not retroactively.)

If you already have an account from a previous Free Fly, you’re all set! Just log in via the Star Citizen launcher. This is the first Free Fly that includes Crusader, so there’s more to explore than ever before. Free Fly accounts will have access to the Hornet F7C military fighter, the Aurora LN starter and the Mustang Delta interceptor.

Officially, the free-fly week runs to 08 Feb, but I have a feeling it may be extended up until the 14th to give as many people a chance to try things out before they split the game packages.

To those of us that have backed the project, and have beta access etc., will we have to purchase a new package, or does the split just imply two installations for us?

EDIT: Never mind, I read it all again, and it made sense this time. I'm still half asleep.

Also tried last night... wow. That was not what I was expecting. I didn't see any tutorial so I just jumped into PU, not knowing how to even take off. Flying is a very weird experience with mouse and keyboard, with roll being on A and D and yaw on mouse(especially because it wasn't reversed as with jets and so). Still figuring that out though.

Did a little combat sim, didn't rock my world, but wasn't a bad experience. Then I managed to disengage the gun gimbals and so I couldn't hit anything anymore :wtf:

Will try again today, still thinking about pre-purchasing before 14 Feb.

Some recent, short SC videos for your interest and (in the case of the first one) amusement:

Alpha glitch:
Emergent game play during live stream:

been playing on the free fly. really fun too bad my joystick keeps acting up on me.

7 year veteran Logitech extreme 3d pro. the z-axis (twist) spring is very loose now, a lot of abuse over the years in freespace 2 and starlancer.

Managed to play around in the universe from Port Olisar. Had quite a bit of fun - climbed out of my cockpit chair and found myself floating in space with my ship flying off... Next time I actually landed at Post Kareah and got blown up while I accidentally went to sleep in my ship's bed instead of climbing out... Next time I shot some enemy ships and then went EVA to turn on the coms station - I love the immersion created by the fact that you're not limited to sitting in a cockpit but actually can move around the ship and climb off, go EVA etc.

I'm not ready to commmit yet but will certainly keep an eye on this game.

Interesting thoughts on Star Citizen from Obsidian Ant (a noted Elite YouTuber) as he runs through a quick mission:

There's definitely enough space for both games imo. (And that was pun intended so you can't use it for the thread that 8sh started!)

Confirmation (of sorts) in the informal community Twitch broadcast on Friday regarding the new pricing for Star Citizen and Squadron 42:

Feb 14th, Star Citizen and Squadron 42 will no longer be sold together at the price of $45 [the present best price for a package containing both games in digital format].

Existing packages purchased before the split will not affected.

After the split, if you want to buy either of the two, they will cost $45 each. However if you decide to buy both, the other one will be classified as an "add-on purchase" at $15, bringing the total for both games to $60.

e.g: Buy Star Citizen for $45 and-on Squadron 42 for $15, and vice versa.

Pricing for the individual games and for the add-on option will increase again as they near launch.

No clarity yet as to if the $15 add-on purchase must be made at the time you purchase your main game, or if you'll be able to purchase it separately later on. (Personally I think they'd be dumb not to do it that way.)

Oh, and as I suspected the one week Free Fly period has been extended for a second week, and will now run to the 14th, so if you've been playing around with the game under Free Fly, you've got a little more time.

I checked this out on Friday and the game is so utterly broken I didn't feel like it was worth wasting any further time on it...

True and I understand that, but it's probably not the best way to promote it right now. It certainly didn't convince me to make a purchase. Quite the opposite.

Yep, I bought it during kickstarter and I won't touch it atm. But that being said I have very limited gaming time and a massive backlog.

Final friendly reminder from me for those still on the fence about pledging to Star Citizen now. The package split of Star Citizen and Squadron 42 is happening on Valentine's Day (this coming Sunday).

If you're interested in getting both games for one price, now's the time to go for it. Best bang-for-your-buck package (imho) at the moment remains the Aurora LN package at $45. (If you do become a new backer, remember to use one of the MyG users referral codes - list back in the OP - to score yourself some extra startup credits, and get them a referral point closer to some cosmetics.)

After the split, pledging/purchasing for either of the games will cost you $45. You'll then have the opportunity to get the other game as an "add-on" to your account for an additional $15. These prices are expected to increase as release dates get closer. You can read all about the Great Package Split of '16 on the RSI site here.

Here's a video (using GTA V!) from Top Hats & Champagne explaining why he recently went against his long-held anti- pre-order/early access stance, and pledged to Star Citizen.

Whatever you decide to do, remember that SC is presently in an early-alpha state. Some users are finding the experience to be a frustrating, bug filled, poorly optimised, crash prone one. Many others are having a lot of fun playing around with the features that are presently avaialable. YMMV.

I'll agree he makes some valid arguments, and actually makes me a little more lenient towards wanted to back. But I think it's still far too early in it's life cycle to pledge for something that is still a few years off.

Fair enough, but isn't that the case with all kickstarters?
