Science!!! Gravitational Waves directly observed in the Universe

Here is a bit of a different topic for discussion.

Yesterday scientist have confirmed the direct observation of gravitational waves emitted by rotating twin black holes. This is quite possibly the biggest scientific discovery in the past few decades, and it's an exciting time to be a scientist.

Here is a great short video that explains what gravitational waves are and how they are observed:

If you want even more detail, here is the official science page published with all the details:

Ooooh, bookmarked for later (cant watch with sound at work)

Also, as a note, Einstein postulated gravitational waves more than 100 years ago when he incorporated special relativity with gravity, creating General Relativity. It's taken the science world more than 100 years to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt the existence and effects of these gravitational waves. It's incredible to think that he was able to explain it's effects and place in the universe more than century before the rest of us would actually observe it.

Every time science tests any part of Einstein's General Relativity theory they prove a new part of it, and this observation is a huge one as well.
