I must say, from the testing I did with it last night I was having loads of fun. Took out a couple of anacondas, didn't get hit once from them. Tried my luck against some Elite Fer De Lance ships and while they were able to hit me once or twice, I still managed to destroy them.
In the end, my shields never went down completely. I never got any hull damage and the weapons did decent. It took about 5 minutes to takes down the anacondas, but that's mostly because I was trying really hard to stay out of it's sights and as such took my time with it.
The Fer De Lances were a lot easier as their hull is made of paper. So once the shields go down they die quickly.

Was a huge amount of fun, would recommend it to other players.

hmmmm.... tempting. But that means I will have to trade in my Cobra, which means no more pretty paint job :(

Perhaps we can do the same with your cobra? Build up something good for bounties. The cobra is an all rounder so it doesn't really excel at any specific role. But I know that it's hardpoints are placed really well. It's medium Hardpoints are placed better than the Viper's... Would be a cool test.

I'm up for it. at the moment I'm running 2 burst lasers and 2 canons. was thinking of replacing the canons with missile racks...

Problem with missile racks are three fold. One is cost per missile, It's expensive to use. Two is the small ammo pool. Three is probably the biggest one, there's a higher chance of hitting bystanders and if you do, it's much easier to become wanted with that loadout.

all fair points. I know they are quite pricey to restock. learned that the hard way when I put a torpedo pylon on my Adder...

I prefer open play as well, but it would be interesting for me if that solves your problems, then I know the issue that I experienced and that contributed to me no longer playing is still around.

If I can have one more HiRes run like I did the other day then I should be able to trade in the cobra and get a fully kitted Viper (MKIII I assume)

but then my next trade in will be an Asp Explorer

might then treat myself with one of these. they aren't AS expensive...

I'm waiting on the next special for paintjobs again. I have a couple of paintjobs for the clipper. Which is funny because I can't even buy the bloody ship.
