Opinion : Wireless vs Landline

Better for MMO gaming or just gaming in General. Coz if its gaming in general your in the wrong section. I think u have to repost this in the hardware section.

What, just for MMOs?

Summary of accounts (via Wow):

IBurst : Sucked... The ping sits 600ms+ but the real issue is that it spikes randomly which makes for a non-fun
vodacom 3G : Sometimes it's stable at about 700ms, but if you are unlucky enough to get hit by "high use times" of the network, expect to be dropped down to 3000ms or even disconnected! Otherwise it's consistant
Telkom 3G : Sits between 500ms and 800ms, I've only ever had issues once (when someone accidentally cut that cable)

Adsl : Sure someone else can provide better info than me on that.

Neotel: I hear rumours that for a while in the beginning it's good, then just gets progressively worse - but I have no first hand experience.

EDIT:
Telkom 3G also gives me 80 to 120ms ping on SAIX TF2 server (this while the other PC is playing WoW as well) - but that would be more dependant on your location to the towers

Ok I can add on to your comment.

DSL: Very good for playing MMO online with as you dont have to worry about signal drops... however you will find it difficult to play games if ur Intl cap is used up or ur using a shaped account.

Wireless: Read above.... Signal quality is important in this case... so if ur planning on going Iburst then make sure the area ur in is well covered.

3G: Ok here u have to weigh out the odds... yes most MMO's dont use alot on data however you do have to worry about signal strengths and weather unfortunately... but i have enjoyed playing MMO's with a 3G.

Fibre (Neotel): This is a no go.... unfortunately with Neotel and the whole fibre sector... gaming has pretty much not been introduced yet and it is very unstable... yeh ur games might be a bit faster but u have to worry about cable breaks and those can take weeks to repair therefore leaving you stranded for sometimes weeks while neotel resolves their issues.

My area is very well coverd by neotel. But they also work on wireless...how will this affect me if lets say im playing wow ?

Well neotel as i say is very unstable at the moment so gaming atm in my opinion is a no go and u should wait until next year when the whole seacom link has completed then it will be better... Iburst should be good if u want wireless...

Wireless & gaming should never be used in the same sentence.

That goes for everything, even peripherals.

Why not grim????

I tested Neteoflex when it launched last year. It was actually pretty decent in WoW, maintaining pings of around 350 without any speed increasing add-ons.

The service seemed to deteriorate from then on though.

I would say ADSL, always. Although, we must remember that your proximity to the exchange, ISP, bandwidth type and of course line speed will all affect your experience.

Well pings are shocking for starters and I just think wireless doesn't promote performance like wired does.

I used iBurst for awhile before getting DSL and you can't compare the 2. iBurst is simply not geared for gaming, neither is any wireless technology out there.

Well 3G is a form of wireless gaming :p I have used it alot when playing WOKF and i never ever had a problem when it came to gaming... but DSL will top everything at this current stage because we are behind the times.... i just say wait until Seacom comes into play then you will see we will be with the rest of the world.... at 12mbps lines

Wireless is a bit underrated, really.

I've a line fault in my house, and can't get ADSL working here, so I've been on iBurst for three years or so. I have higher pings than fixed line users, obviously, but at around 75-90ms locally, it's not really an issue at issue. Anything up to 300ms is, despite what anyone might want to tell you to the contrary, quite okay for gaming.

Of course, reception strength is a significant factor, though. I live in an excellent reception area for iBurst (there's a base station a few blocks away).

Any ETA on the seacom?

Seacom has already arrived but not yet set in place I think they said something about end of this yr early next yr ourselves(Africa), Europe and Asia will all be linked and everything will be made cheaper regarding broadband too...

Ok I guess for some games wireless is sufficient, if you plan on playing FPS's I wouldn't waste your time, even DOTA is a ball ache on wireless :D

300ms is ok for mmo's try playing a 300ms ping on COD or dota u will cry

Yeh u will find very few MMO's that you can play via wireless without problems but hey no problem in tryin ey

Definitely ADSL and if you can afford the extra cost then get an Unshaped Account

I have a 4MB line with Telkom and a 3GB Unshaped account with AXXESS and consistently get pings of between 300-400ms while playing WOW on the European Servers

My brother has a 3G connection with Vodacom and while playing WOW on the same European Servers his ping is always 800+ even with the signal bar showing full
