Takealot Daily Deals discount is misleading

Wait what? This after a sorta-recent mybroadband article finding that takealot daily deals are like 95% (yes thumbsucked stat, bite me) the best price you can get at the time?

Yeah, but that's a different measure entirely. This complaint is about whether the discounts Takealot said it is offering are accurate.

At R1,399 for the SSD Takealot might be offering the best price, but the ASA has found that its claim that the discount was 26% was misleading.

Im sooo happy this has been mentioned i have been complaining about it for a while where they just mark products up then discount them to its normal price :p

I understand the argument but I don't see why Takealot should be singled out. Most, if not all, retailers use false 'WAS' prices to make the deal more appealing to the consumer. I thought it was common practice, as dishonest as it is.

Nope not so common after all. Although I know Edgars was caught doing the same thing, I haven't heard of any other major retailers/etailers doing it.

Well I assume that's just because other retailers cover their tracks better or customers don't make as big a fuss. Also, a sticker in a store is very different to online retail obviously, what with price history and comparisons at your fingertips, but I'm 99.9% sure this happens all over, it's just harder to prove elsewhere.

sadly its something us consumers actually support.

Here's an episode that is rather interesting :)

TL: DW: Buying a R100 item for R100, feels ok...buying a R200 item for R100...feels awesome, even if they're the exact same item. thats the effect.

Wasn't Edgars bust for actually marking up some of their items? When people removed the stickers the previous price was much lower?

So, I bought a PS+ 365 day sub from Takealot yesterday for R639, which is actually a good price, since the proper price for it is R749 (if buying straight from the PS Store), it's a R110 (~14.7%) discount, but they show that the list price is R794, which works out to R155 (~19.5%) discount.

Could be that someone mistyped 794 instead of 749, but it did make me think of this thread...

This was more often than not my beef with Groupon and the like. They would post a deal and claim it was 50% off, (eg. R1000 reduced to R500) but when you Google for said product or service through other vendors, you'd find it actually only cost R700 or so. Sometimes it only cost R500 to begin with. The Groupon price was often still a good deal, lower than elsewhere, but the simple fact that they were blatantly lying about the discount value to lure in buyers made me not want to do business with them on principle.
