Speed Runs !?

Will lift for boobs!
So this has always been a very strange concept to me. It is not a new things by any means, but it is not heard of that often.
I have this friend who is hectically into speed runs and follows all of the greatest uhm... speed runners! =D

One of the most recent ones that i stumbled upon just sounds unreal to me. Finishing Half Life 2 in only 40 Minutes...
There is a whole site to keep track of these speed running records of games!

Surely this is not what Campaign games were designed for. it is one hell of a feat, but does it not spoil the game and what it was intended for?

It seems like lots and lots of planning, with numerous trial and error attempts.
Have any of you ever tried this, or have any experience/Knowledge about this?

I've heard of it. Its not something I would be able to do.

I think it also takes some out of the box thinking/ level glitching to get right sometimes. There was some dude who managed to get above the level in portal and got through it really quick.

I am not sure and might be wrong and correct me if I am. But I think proper Speed runners do not use glitches/exploits.

I recently saw a person speed run dark souls in 1:17:25 it is quite insane, it might not be how the game is intended to be played but it is really interresting to watch. I don't think it spoils the game, infact I think it adds another level of challenge to the game, althought that does depend how you "speed run" it, using glitches etc.

I find it rather interesting to watch Souls Speed Runs, though there are different categories for them.

All bosses / compulsory bosses / with glitches / base game pre-patch / post patch / etc

I'm fascinated by speed runners. I tend to enjoy watching them run through games that I've played to death already, seeing how they exploit every possible part of the game just to finish it quicker.

Yes, speed running is definitely not how the game is intended to be played, as there are various experiences that gets lost from trying to do a speed run of a game. But let's be honest, it's not the first time these gamers have played these games. In fact, I'm pretty sure they have put in more hours into a single game they are speed running than I have ever done in any one game.

I got into watching speedruns about 2 years ago. It is so awesome to watch. The people running the games are crazy. If you want to see something really impressive, check out the Tetris block

And then twice a year the events are held where it is a full week of speedruns 24/7 to raise money for charity. My wife hates it when these events are on cause i sit and watch this shit all day every day. Think the next event is in July. its really something to check out.

Yeah, i first got introduced into speedrunning with the guy who does hl1 super quick... but yea, they make use of glitches etc to skip huge parts of the game.

Still, it DOES take incredible skill and practice to pull off. And its really fun to watch, especially if its a game you put ALOT of hours into just playing once. obviously I wouldnt watch a game I haven't played myself yet, due to spoilers, so I'm pretty sure you're limited to having viewers who have completed the game hehe.

I enjoy the 2d game speedruns. Like castlevania and Ninja Gaiden.

The half life one I saw a while back the guy did a speed run by moving and jumping backwards, I think they found Gordon moves faster backwards than forwards.

Yes the gameplay is utterly ruined but speedrunners have already played the game to death. You will also find that that is what they play the majority of the time.

I found that video last night. I stopped though when he was about to enter an area I have yet to play. Don't want to spoil it for myself.

He gets to Sen's Fortress at like 15mins! I have been playing 20 hours. Granted, he does skip a lot of the areas and bosses to get there, but still.

No, there are loads of different categories. Some are even, not technically a speed runs, but in the same concept. for example least buttons pressed.

I found this a few years ago and have been an avid watcher ever since. The two events are Awesome games done quick and Summer games done quick.

I'm a big retro gaming fan and I have a lot of respect for these guys, it takes time and dedication to pull off what they can do.
Also, on games done quick, they don't really take themselves too seriously and its quite fun watching the guys mess around and have fun for a very good cause!

How many times do you need to play a game before you can beat it blindfolded?

For those who don't know.
The Summer Games Done Quick 2016 is currently on the way on Twitch!

I would enjoy watching them, but would never attempt the feat myself.

"Finish a 20-hour RPG in 20 minutes" - something like that...

Holy crap SGDQ 2016 started and I totally forgot!
I always watch these live... flippen awesome campaign that they run just watching the guys speedrun is pretty awesome.
The whole vibe there seems pretty fun. Especially when PJ and Murphagator plays a game. Last time the 2 of them did Battleblock theater with the devs and Stamper on call... I never laughed that much in my life(this is probably a lie but added for dramatic effect)

One of my favourite times of the year. I also totally forgot it was this weekend. Have caught a few games today. Last nights demon souls was epic. Although i did fall asleep halfway through it. Excited for the mega man block starting now.
