Replacement graphics card recommendations ?

First of all, let me start by saying Kudos to Chris at wootware,
I bought a "recertified" powercolor R9 290 graphics card for R4000 from wootware last year September.
Big saving as its a card that already went back to the factory, was fixed and worked for me from day 1.
Last week while playing The Division the graphics distorted, windows hung, and when I rebooted the pc I was greeted by a windows screen with black blocks running around the screen.
After reinstalling windows from scratch I confirmed that the problems start when the ATI drivers are loaded, I even tried older drivers. Then I installed one of my old ATI Radeon HD 6900 series cards, problems are gone, so the screencard is faulty.

I shipped the card back to Wootware, they tested the card, confirmed to be faulty.

I have been given R4k credit by Wootware for a new card (as the card I bought was still under warranty until January 2017). Really excellent service. (I was expecting to be told the card would go to a factory, might get it back in 6 months).

Now Im wondering what do I replace this with..
do I wait a month to perhaps have an extra 1K and what do I go for ?

Colleague of mine at work tells me he now only buys NVidia due to his personal experience with having issues with several ATI cards, and his opinion that Nvidia cards generally out perform ATI cards in most price ranges (which is a debate for another day)

Ive always bought ATI cards, never had problems, and the issue with the card I write up to the fact that I went out and bought a card that already had a trip to the factory.

So for the 5K price range, I might consider:
Powercolor PCS+ R9 390 8gb for R5499
Galax GeForce GTX 970 Sniper 4gb edition for R5699
ASUS GTX960 4gb for R5399
ASUS STRIX-R9380X OC4G for R5492
ASUS R9290 4gb for R5899
Gigabite R929X OC 4gb for R5972

R5000 to R6000 is my price range if I add an extra 1000 or so to the store credit.

Any recommendations ? Nvidia ? ATI ? Should I look at a cheaper card that would be comparable to this range ?
Should I look at a slightly more expencive card that would be leaps and bounds better than this range ?

Do let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Agreed with the GTX 970 indeed

I have the GALAX GTX 970 HOF. And very impressed and happy with it

It's just build quality, but again it's like saying a Golf GTi is bad. It's not terrible, but it could be better

R9 390 Gaming 8GB 512bit GDDR5.

Bang for buck, this card is amazing.
I plan on getting it later this year.

You can also give the cards a comparison at gpureview.com but at the end of the day its gonna come down to personal preference.

I've had AMD and Nvidia GPU's before and both were great and served their purpose.

Currently I'm on the MSI GTX 670 and again, bang for buck - I'm gonna aim for the R9 390 this year.

Just don't get Powercolor or Galax cards please, get XFX, Asus, MSI or Gigabyte

As PsyschoFish said, 100% agree - rather go for a HIGHER name brand of GPU.

I have looked closely at a GTX 970 MSI and my GTX970 GALAX HOF. And mine is MUCH better build quality. Back plate is amazing, fans and shroud look 100 times better and feel much more solid. So I would not say to write GALAX off at all because they are "cheap" I do agree that you should put out the extra few bucks for quality. With the Powercolor i agree 100%
