SA Community Game Dev - For learners too

So, I am very eager to start with something, even if I had to on my own for the meantime. Not going to search for me previous post, but I am very noob. I've started with Blender, got busy this year and sort of neglected it. Want to start again.

I also want to start working on an engine, Unreal looks great. Been watching some unreal tutorial vids. Really want to push this, at least for myself. Been putting it of for years.
Great man, if you have any questions or want directions feel free to ask. My unreal skills arent bad but not pro.

Hi ArchieChoke, would you be interested in reviving this? I need a stimulating new hobby, and would love to dive into this.
(And finally having decent internet really helps)

Okay, so we're still doing it on the unreal engine?
I'll make a plan to update my copy

Yeah, most my code and assets are already done in unreal engine, don't wanna spend time converting code from C++ to any other language. Can we do a project that's pretty simple, like a classic snake game or something like that?

I think we should push our skill, but not our management skills. Because if we find it interesting, then we stay motivated.
Also there seems to be a MASSIVE need for a simple, fast and beautiful FPS.

Nothing elaborate.
Do you know what the Lean Startup is? I feel that using it's core methodology will help us A LOT. Mostly because we're just a few guys, and not working on it 24/7

Hello guys,

If you have need of a writer for story or content just let me know, including dialogue or cut-scenes or any storyboard elements.. I would be happy to help on your project. I do not know if you checked out my thread regarding my debut novel, but have a gander at it and then decide if you have need for my skills/services. I am branching out my skill set, and video game writing is one of the things I am looking at getting into. If you want some examples from my novel or of my writing you can read the first part of the novel for free and a free short story I have released. I will of course supply you with free copies of my novel should you want to read more.

I am also an ex-game developer where I used to specialize in scripting and map design, but that was a long time ago and one cannot bargain on those skills anymore. I mainly worked in the Id tech engines and source engines, and some work in the Torque engines. But as I said those skills are beyond rusty but I do have some idea what goes into creating a game and could help on other facets if there is a need for it.

I've been learning Unity quite a bit lately, a bit slow cause i don't have much free time but made 2 games following a course on Udemy, a block breaker clone and a simple space shooter which can be played here: http://gamebucket.io/game/5b370d33-adce-4075-901e-eb61a034cc8d (arrows to move, space to shoot)

Busy with a Plants v Zombies clone before moving onto 3D stuff.

Really want to start my own projects but making myself finish the courses first. Just want to make a bunch of small games to learn.

I am not too good at C# so will probably use uScript / Playmaker (Visual scripting / finite state machine) when making my own games, but learning the fundamentals in C# fist

We will be pushing our skills. The main thing is we need something that runs first then functionality can be expanded.
Essentially we really need to set out the project scope and work. With out this we could just be prototyping Features or Functions forever without having anything Playable and Fun.

So here will be the basics:-
UI (Main menu ) - Consists of (Single player (Free Roam) | Multiplayer (Simple menu for direct connect) | Options (Change key mappings))
UI (Player Feedback) - Consists of (Health | Ammo count)
Map - (Decision if we doing Static objects or Procedural)

If we can get this started then we expand from there.

Lean Startup, not familiar with the term and googling returns ENTREPRENEURSHIP(http://theleanstartup.com/principles) info which i don't see how it correlates.
Perhaps send me a link ill have a look

Hey Spartan long time man. :P

Ooooo yes please, writer is what we don't have and actually need as Lore and story is vital to a game.
Just a quick question are you able to Draw / Paint? Would you need someone to help with that? (As we do have someone that can assist)

Looking at amazon's pre-read, your story is very comprehensive. One question, the Titans , how would you represent them? Like in Titan Fall ? Like Pacific RIM? Like Mech Warriors?

Map design, your post on this interests me, how interested would you be in Map design? Map Creation?, Maps are critical to game play.

Conerning your past experiences with engines, I doubt you will struggle to use Unreal engine TBH. Please download and try it, it will be foreign for the first couple times of use but then you will get fluid with it im sure. - Provide feedback if you are comfortable using it or would you rather prefer 3D modeler apps to do map creation?

I would love your input when it comes to Creating a game.

Well, that's a really good start for the basics.
My Unreal Engine is now installed again, and I see that you're still on my friendslist.

Are we going to use SoureForge for internal communications? We need some way to get organized so that we don't lose momentum again.

Yes and no. The Lean Startup is the story behind IMVU, its MASSIVE failure, and impressive success later on.
But it's a long book to read so I'll have a think about how to write a digest version of it. It is my belief that core concepts are oddly enough more relevant to gaming than to business. Because one can work hard, complete a polished project and arrive at failure.

Best thing to do is to get a simple prototype of the gameplay up and running to see if the core gameplay is fun. If its an FPS then its pretty easy to import the Unity / UE First person Shooter controllers and get going. I suppose then its just about making the gameplay different to any other FPS.

And that's where adapting the lean startup principals come into play. :) But that's for another time.

Well, since the last take on this project, I can now be a LOT more involved. Might even get back into coding.. but I'll check out the FPS packages and stuff later tonight. There's still exploring to be done with the unreal engine. :D

Dunno about you guys, but I feel quite excited about this

Yeah, its a bit of work to do, but essentially its the basics required to have something playable.

Yeah we will use SourceForge (https://sourceforge.net/projects/mygamingupstarts/), still think you are in the group.
So I will update tonight get the ball rolling, but please be active and respond when you have time available.

Yeah I see that happening alot with games, great Quality work, great gameplay (Example: Evolve, it was a really great game but the approach was terrible and chased customers away). Would be an interesting read.

At the end of the day, everyone involved in this project should have low expectations, do not expect to get paid, do not expect to make a great hit. Expect to learn and expand your knowledge.

Yeah this game/project will be a pure prototype. Unless it turns into something great and everyone wants more.

HAHA I was just excited to hear a bing on my phone and seeing this thread revived, then reading all you'all have being doing things for a while in the background. Really super awsum!

So please keep that excitement going.

Snip Snip...

It has been a long time indeed Archie. I will always remember the Dayz days and standing up for you against those who shall not be named. Writer and concept artist are two different jobs, and I can only help there if you wanted stick men and women.

I am unfortunately not an artist by any means. I paint and construct with words and story. I draw with plot and characters. That is my skill.

Well my story Gamma Nine would of course not be part of this project. If you do want me in on your project I would create or write new lore or concepts for you to work off of. Gamma Nine is currently copyrighted by me and so are the characters and everything else except the tributes and nods to other projects. That does not mean I am not open to using or creating from my novels at a later date, but for now I am still writing the series and want to finish it before bringing it into other mediums. Maybe to be revisited once there are people who want to or have made something and have gained the experience.

To answer the question in any case. When you think of the Titans, think Master Chief meets Hellghast meets Warhammer 40K Space Marines. They are super soldiers wielding specialized armor, etc. Give the book a read and you will see where I went with it. It would make a great game I think, but not just yet. The story still needs to be told.

I loved map design but like I said my skills are beyond rusty. I have moved on from it, but I can still give you input regarding design and flow or at least help with concepts. Remember a video game writer writes how a level would play out and the programmers and designers craft it. So if the story needs a set path with junctions and other things then the level designer works with the writer to create those levels.

I would love to do more but at the moment I can only provide my writing skills. I love game design and I have been in the business before but my schedule and upcoming projects/business will hinder me when it comes to taking on more.

I have my regular day job, my writing, marketing for my writing, studies, research, more writing, other projects that might happen, networking and more writing. I am jam packed for the next 2 years setting up at least 3 new careers. So please do not misunderstand. I would love to help more but currently I can only do the writing. From concept to characters, weapon descriptions, lore, items anything that needs text attached to it. As I free up more time I could pitch in more and I am always open to give advice

*raises hand*
I'll help with the art side of things. Also have a whole network of other digital artists who I can *cough* persuade to help out with favours from time to time.

Good art seems to be something that would be needed, there is a bunch of free stuff out there but its always better to have your own stuff.

I ave been learning Unity, so would be a bit of a jump over to UE4, although the blueprint system is nice i have Playmaker & uScript for Unity which basically allows you build a game / rapid prototype without having to code. I am learning C# scripting anyway just to understand how it works.

Anyway check out this website, an awesome collection of gamedev tools and assets: https://game-development.zeef.com/david.arcila

EDIT: Did we decide on an arena type FPS back then?

Hehe... Good times actually. Still remember you warning me * Ladders are dangerous in Dayz, then i died.

Yeah dude I would love for you to come up with lore and concepts. Please add yourself to the SourceForge group (https://sourceforge.net/projects/mygamingupstarts/), we will create a section for writer to great threads. Through any Ideas you have and all involved can vote or give feedback.

Ok cool. Apologies didn't want to take your IP.
Ill probably buy the book TBH, you got it on kindle.

Alright well then I will ensure that we communicate with you. (with regards to map design)

Don't worry, think everyone has other responsibilities, this is another hobby for most. So when you can add input or be involved with story/lore or map designs it would be appreciated. At least when you add input we can do work while you are busy with other things.

Cool dude, Keep em on call when we need them from time to time.

Yeah it would be as you would have to get used to being able to do many things within UE whereas unity you had to do it outside of unity. But from what you placed above, sounds like you understand key concepts that is needed to understand a Basic of a game.

EDIT: Did we decide on an arena type FPS back then?
Yeah it will remain the same until we feel that we got the most of the MP, FPS and can start to expand it to open world or actually just add additional gamemodes. - But lets atleast get started with something.

ArchieChoke

I registered but how do I add myself to the project? And are you guys going to have a meeting or something to decide on genre and concepts regarding setting/world/universe, etc? Characters, what kind of arenas, all the bits and bobs.

- - - - - - - - - - Double Post Merged - - - - - - - - - -

Oh and thank you if you decide to purchase it. It is not much and I hope you like it.

I also did not mean to sound so douchy about my IP. It is just my current baby and I want to work on it more and finish what I have started before jumping to other mediums.
