In a June update blog post, Valve has announced it has sold over half a million Steam Controllers since their release last year.

In addition to the controller's original features, you can now configure and use the controller from your desktop, and its Force Reactors can now "capture and reproduce the rumble effects" from various games. There's also full Steam Controller support in VR Game Theater mode, including being able to use its motion controls as a virtual steering wheel.

There are also more configuration options coming soon. Valve says upcoming updates will include being able to use Activators to assign actions to press-and-hold, double click, toggle, and more. The example the company gives is being able to cycle through all your weapons in DOOM by pressing a button, or double tapping it to bring up the BFG.

The Steam controller launched in November 2015, but IGN's review says it "compromises too much to keep its dual touchpads, making it mediocre for too many games."

It's interesting to see two different spins on one set of data; Ars Technica reported that, since every Steam Machine ships with a Steam Controller, there must have been far less than half a million Steam Machines sold, so it's effectively dead in the water.

Would you buy the controller for the sake of having it? For its functionality? As a backup? Or just the notion that you have one ready and available?

Have 2 x Astrum Vibe Freedom's in the TV box.

They work OK but having to hack remap keys or run emulate 360's to play games is a real pain in the back side, esp when you have a new game. Would not mind replacing them with 2 x Steam controllers if they make said set-up easier, then again, will have to find them locally 1st.
