IW Silencing Community

Isengard

No Hobbits Allowed
Yesterday, in a barrage of media announcements, it was made abundantly clear that Infinity Ward has no plans to support standard dedicated servers in their upcoming game Modern Warfare 2. The community immediately responded by posting several petitions on the official IW forums, two of which were largely successful. The two biggest petitions averaged 250-300 pages in length, totaling several thousand signatures each (it is unknown how many were duplicate signatures between the two). Infinity Ward responded in force, and closed down the two largest petitions overnight.

When gamers checked for them this morning, they were greeted with a "The topic you requested does not exist" message. Community member TriggerPappy contacted an IW moderator, and when asked, said that he promised no other petitions would be closed. TriggerPappy promptly reposted the original thread, found here. Unfortunately that promise came late, and IW has already been flamed by every PC Gamer and his uncle in the forum, effectively bringing down the IW forums in a wave of chaos. One of the major petitions is still online, though not on the IW forums, can be located here.

The question we are all left with? Does IW's silencing mean that they are opposed to one of our basic freedoms, the right to petition? Are they assuring us that there will be no means, no matter how much begging is involved, to get dedicated servers? We expect an answer from community manager FourZeroTwo on Monday.

It seems that the PC Gaming community is locked in a battle of willpower with Infinity Ward. If the community can deliver on their petition and revoke all pre-orders, we might see a response from the stalwart company. Until then, it is doubtful that we will receive much more than acknowledgement of existance and removed posts.

I love me a good internet drama. :D

They aren't doing themselves any favours by being heavy handed like they are ...... wtf is up with all the companies forsaking the gamer lately? Has greed really taken such a root?

MW2 is gonna lose it's appeal if this behavior carries on ..... it has with me already.

The sad thing is, like some peiople here keep saying, they sigh the petitions, but there still gonna buy it. And IW/Activision knows that so they don't give a phlying phuck.

Nope, It's infinityward.

Them having sucky MP in a COD just isn't possible. Even if it's utter crap it would still be awesome cause its Infinityward.
priceless :D

i wonder if good olde ms/sony had a hand in this in having IW being more dedicated towards the console as it seems and less to wards pc by not having dedicated servers. just says one thing to me that iw said f*** the pc user they can help themselves if they want to play.

and im quite sure now this is exactly the reason for now mp demo, because then we would have known that there will be no server dedication but the shyt p2p method...

...definitely going to go the try the full product first now and buy later on IF the sp impresses me.

It's basically come down to a "Up Yours!" "Take it, or leave it".

Sad really. :(

sad to say but... you are being *flagshipped â„¢

*To be thoroughly screwed over in a laughable way by the incompetent design in an online game, usually specific to games developed by Flagship Studios. The origin of the term is from the game Hellgate: London, and the seemingly impossible number of major design disasters it contained.
victim: I've killed 65535 demons and now whenever I kill a demon my character gets stuck and I have to relog to continue playing!
troll: lol, flagshipped!

victim: I traded for an item with another player and I lost 1.7 million palladium as the game truncated my money at 9,999,999!
troll: ahaha, flagshipped!

victim: I paid $150 for a lifetime subscription as it would include special event quests and items for holidays, but the biggest holiday there is, Christmas, had none!
troll: Flagshipped!

victim: I just had a cool unique item drop from the boss I killed, but the item says "subscriber only"? Wtf is this, shareware loot? I can't even trade it to a subscriber!
troll: Yep, you got flagshipped.

victim: I unsubscribed recently, but now I'm stuck with the subscriber transmogrifier cube item taking up a lot of space in my inventory that I can't use and I can't drop or destroy!
troll: That's what you get for paying to be flagshipped.

So considering this game is gona cost just about the same for console as it is for PC, i may aswell cancel my pre-order, and get the console version for some button mashing fun. And keep playing CoD4 for competitive play.

That is EXACTLY what they want you to do! Don't even support them, go download it off pirate bay instead.

QFT ........ that is why they will continue to do what they are doing .... because there are so many idiots.

(I'm not referring to the clan chaps, that's different)

well im not buying, wish rest of the dones would do the same which would result in quick reaction.

Maybe they are using this as an excuse to pull out from PC developement and focus on Consoles?

hence my thought.

To these guys at these companies... where there is money there is "power"........ little did they know this is reality... if they dont deliver then they get shut down... by us gamers... we are the customers and if we want something we make it known that we will stop at nothing to get it... i mean people want the opportunities to play online and this company is taking what has been around for ages away....

Look Games are becoming a bussiness. Run by bussiness men and not people who actually play games kinda like the music industry. So its just about making money in the end every thing that makes alot of money becomes souless

Well then, frankly, it will fail as an industry. You cannot make the games simply for the money, and actually expect people to buy them, in the same way you cannot make a shitty movies and expect people to watch them.

I must say, I can see this becoming the most pirated AAA title of all time on PC. The increase in price and the decrease in functionality plays right into the pirates rationalising hands...

PC gamers have reacted with horror to Infinity Ward's decision to cut mod and private server support from Modern Warfare 2, and now DICE has entered the fray.

The executive producer for the Battlefield series has vowed on his Twitter that DICE will continue to back hard-core PC gamers the hilt: "Dedicated servers FTW. What ever secures a better online experience is a given for us."

"Quick! Let's get to EB and cancel our pre-orders!"
And from Infinity Ward: silence.

Elsewhere, the fallout is still settling from IW's bombshell. Many have sworn to cancel their pre-orders of Modern Warfare 2; many more have called this fiasco the death of competitive gaming as we know it.

While unlikely to sway the Call of Duty developer, an online petition has started calling on IW management to reconsider their decision, and has already shot to over 36,000 signatures.

The case made by the petition is succinct: "Get Infinity Ward to review their decision not to allow fully dedicated servers for their forthcoming game release CoD:MW2. Remember that this Call of Duty was made popular by PC Gamers who have supported the series throughout."

To listen to the podcast where Rob Bowling broke the news, click here. Follow through to the end, and you'll witness a train wreck in slow motion. The sense of despair in the hosts' voices is unmistakeable, as they openly compare this perceived betrayal to both the assassination of JFK and the Hindenburg disaster: "Oh, the humanity!"

Hehe. Now they are becoming the butt of other developers jokes. Serves them right. :D
