You can play Star Citizen for free this weekend

By the time you have the download complete the weekend will almost be over, unless this freefly is only a partial download :D

Nope, it will be the whole shebang, all 24+GB of it. But if you leave even a 4mbps line running 24/7 you can get it done in 20 hours or so. :D

Yeah... best looking slideshow I've ever seen. Very pretty pictures.... for a game!
Meaning...?
Remember space game fans - Star Citizen is an unreleased game still in Alpha state. There is a lot more than just a slideshow there, but it is buggy, glitchy and primarily being released to allow backers to help test things. Beo has a valid point that the frame rates are poor, but it's not slideshow bad.

CIG are hosting a full main floor exhibition booth at GamesCom (the free fly promotion is tied to this event). They are live streaming from their booth with a team of 4 Star Citizen community Twitchcasters for 6-8 hours (generally from 10AM - 6PM) each day of the con through until Sunday. These streamers have been tasked with helping to show gamers not familiar with SC the progress and state of the game at the moment. There's hourly ship and package giveaways through the stream as well. Today they're focussing on the mini Persistent Universe and showing off the missions and multi-crew ships.

Recommended viewing if you don't want to make the 25GB download but do want to get an idea of progress on the game, even for slideshow aficionados :)

I've been following the Gamescom progress on the side. They're currently only playing the live build; Friday night's presentation will hopefully showcase some of the new stuff CIG have been working on.

Current live build is not too bad; 20something fps seems to be the norm. Arena Commander and Area 18 aka the Social Module run much better.

I'll stick to Elite for the time being.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fanboy of Elite, as much as I love it. I want to like Star Citizen, there just isn't that excitement for it there as I have for Elite.

I'm not judging. I grew up playing Wing Commander, you probably took the Elite route. Horses for courses.

Remind me to pop into the ED thread and rile you up sometime. I know very little about it so everything I post will be deliciously ignorant.

hehe that's fine, I love helping out new players.

But there still is an aspect of interest for me in SC, I don't follow it's development as closely as I do Elite though. Still, I would always be willing to give it a bash.

Makes sense and I won't judge anyone for not being interested in it at least until Beta.
I'm just excited about the idea of SC and the increase in development pace recently makes it seem they are getting there.

Also, I just want to test out that Freelancer :D
