Console or PC gaming - lots of questions, need answers

Right then, so I've always been a PC gamer but in recent years due to work I've slacked off a lot. I still play quite a lot of sports titles with friends, particularly NBA2K and PES (not the last one cos it was inferior to the console version).

I've been in Berlin for 5 months and in another month I'm heading back to Cape Town and I'd like to get back into more gaming (haven't played any games here in Berlin cos my laptop is not for gaming) but I'm a bit unsure what tactic to take.

CURRENT PC

In Cape Town I have a 3 year old PC. I had some RAM/motherboard issue late last year and had to move the 2 sticks to the other slots and things were then fine. I then got a new gfx card for Fallout and it resulted in freezes during games (mostly). I wonder if it's due to my PSU not being able to handle the new card - any thoughts on that?

So plan A is to just get my old PC working properly with a new PSU or whatever. Get an HDMI cable (would have to be 10m to connect it to the TV for sports gaming. Also probably get a new TV as mine is about 4 years old and not FULL HD. There are now streaming options that are potentially better than HDMI, right? Any advice on that?

PROS - Cheapest option by far, if it works.

CONS - Finding the freeze problem is a pain in the ass. My PC is quite old, for example the motherboard having that RAM issue. If I return to Berlin then I can't lug that big thing with me.

NEW GAMING PC

Sell my old one for parts and get a new system. I'm very interested in VR although will probably wait a bit for the next gen or until there is a clear winner. Not a fan of early adopting. So this would future proof that aspect of it.

PROS - High end graphics, future proofing for VR, don't have to worry about an old system falling on it's face at any moment.

CONS - Can't take to Berlin. Expensive as hell, particularly with a new TV as well. It's just such a time suck to find the right parts/system, get everything installed, blah blah.

CONSOLE

I've always resisted consoles. Love the idea of them for sports but I'm so used to gaming with a mouse. Not sure I could ever play FPS with a controller and feel anything but pure frustration. But the portability is great, the convenience of it, etc.

PROS - Convenient. Allow me to play, pause, and check PC for work which means, I think, I'd play more games. Let's me play games that I would otherwise miss out on (Last of Us, PES, etc.). Might be able to bring with me to Berlin.

CONS - Expensive games (although I guess people trade a lot). Potentially not enjoying playing a lot of games with a controller.

GAMING LAPTOP

Another option I've considered but not too greatly.

Pros - If I return to Berlin next year I can still play games here. My games easily go with me.

Cons - Expensive compared to the alternatives. Underperforming compared to desktop PC. Can't work and play games at the same time. Seems you need to upgrade the damn things so damn often in order to retain value.

Alternatively I could do a combo of things, like a console for certain types of games and then fix my old PC and use it for FPS and strategy.

Or just give up on gaming and realize I'm a bloody adult.

I use to be a PC gamer for about 5 years, I mostly played World of Warcraft and some other good FPS titles. A few months ago I made the decision to switch over to Xbox One and try it out for myself. I’m very happy with my decision, not only is it more convenient and cheaper but there are some pretty great exclusive titles for the Xbox One. I still have my PC but I moved all my gaming interest to my console, the community is great and there are so much content on their online market. I mostly play online and I never had any technical issues, they constantly update the system and games. I don’t want to ramble about which one is better than the other because both PC and console are great in their own respective ways but to me having to spend so much money over the last few years on good hardware for my PC was hard with a tight budget. I enjoy gaming on my console very much.

Thanks for that. Yeah, I think that's where I'm leaning. New TV + Xbox One + figure out what is causing my current PC to freeze.

Wonder if I should get an Xbox One here in Germany, must be cheaper. Is 500gb model enough for a casual gamer? Should I be looking for the s model? Really have zero knowledge on consoles.

To be honest now is a good time to get the 500gb model, you only get about 350gb free space though because of the preloaded software but you can save extra data on an external drive or you can opt for the 1tb console. I am satisfied with my 500gb because I use my external drive for my media so its always connected to my Xbox. I forgot to mention for saved games you should use a usb 3.0 external drive. The new Xbox One S is a pretty good upgrade from the first models but not in such a big way, its smaller and has some graphic and processing hardware upgrades. I chose to go with Xbox One because as a PC gamer I feel more comfortable with it, it has Windows 10 so you can stream your gaming straight to your PC and the media player is excellent.

Yeah, doubt I need a ton of space. I don't really hoard games. Plus being able to add an external drive is perfect.

I see the S releases here before I leave and the price is pretty good for the 500gb model + fifa 17 - less than R5k.

Just need to know whether there will be any issues buying it here. It comes with 14 live months, which hopefully I can redeem in SA.

Gaming laptop by far. I've been through consoles and gaming PCs, heck I still have my fairly decent gaming PC and still-unused PS4 on a shelf (both 2 years old). I have a gaming laptop that I work on each day as well. In the evenings and/or weekends I just start up Steam and play a game on it. I'm so used to the environment it offers me that it becomes an issue turning on another device to play games...

Best of all is having your gaming machine with you everywhere you go. If you buy a decent spec machine now (with a 1060 GPU, 16GB RAM and an SSD + HDD combo) it will easily last you 3-4 years without upgrades.

How much would that kind of laptop be though? 20k?

And do you connect to a TV or external monitor when you game at home?

Well, my MSI GS70 was going for R27k last year... Prices have gone up a bit, but I'm sure if you shop around you can find a gaming laptop with a 1060 GPU for around R25k. Look for MSI, Asus or Gigabyte. I'm quite certain that the Gigabyte models will be cheaper than their MSI and ASUS counterparts. Forget about finding a Dell, Alienware or other brand with those specs at that price point.

I do plug in a 23" monitor when I game at home, but plugging in a TV shouldn't be an issue (HDMI, yo). My MSI has 1x HDMI port and 2x mini display ports, so I can have 3 monitors plugged in directly to the laptop. I sometimes work with 2x 23" monitors connected, flanking the laptop's native 17" display.

use the money you would have spent on a console or gaming laptop and just upgrade your existing rig.

Lugging around a desktop when travelling isn't really a feasible idea. Since the OP plans to travel between CT and Germany I would honestly recommend a gaming laptop.

ja but it's a one time deal, totally worth the effort. If he was going to be travelling back and forth every couple of months then I'd say yes by all means get a laptop

A lot can happen in 5 months... Maybe the OP ends up going back to Germany or somewhere else? Besides, if he is willing to spend R25k on a gaming laptop then I can heartily recommend it. It provides unparalleled gaming freedom. You can't beat gaming on the beach, at a mountain resort or a hotel.

Well no, I don't think I'd want to swing that much.

I think my plan is as follows:

- Buy xbox one s here in Germany.
- Replace PSU on current system at home and hope that solves the freeze issue.
- Give console gaming a try + old system for any non console games.
- If I don't like console gaming and am planning to return to Germany next year then maybe sell the console + current laptop + current desktop system and buy a monster laptop.

I would not recommend buying an Xone or PS4 right now (locally), the X One S and PS4 Neo (Whatever it's called) is due for release in SA in the very near future. The XBox One S should be available in SA before the end of September.

I'm in Berlin so it would be the One S, which releases in Germany 2 weeks before I leave for SA.

If you plan on selling the desktop, laptop and console in a couple of months, why not just grab the laptop now? You won't get your money back from the console and your current PC and laptop will only continue to devaluate while prices keep climbing... So you'll easily end up paying 20% more for the same gaming laptop next year than you would now.

Mainly because I want to experience gaming on console and see how I feel about it. Also I'd be buying the console for considerably less than it'd cost in SA, so I reckon if I sell next year it will be close to the purchase price. If I buy a gaming laptop it will probably be when I return to Germany as it'd be a hell of a lot cheaper to get it here.

If you grab an XBOX One or DS4 controller and hook it up to the laptop and plug the laptop into your TV you end up with a very console-like experience. Especially if you run Steam in big picture mode. You can also grab a wireless media keyboard (with built-in touchpad) for quicker typing in games or when you want to actually use the PC abilities of the laptop on the TV, like browsing the web.

I still think you'll end up losing a bit of money on the console sale, not to mention your current PC and laptop, and remember that prices only ever go up, unless the hardware gets replaced with newer hardware. In thst case you'll more likely than not end up buying the newer, more expensive hardware.

But each to their own. I made the decision to rather get a gaming laptop last year and it's one of the best hardware decisisions I've made in years. My PS4 is gathering dust and my gaming PC has been relegated to a media server.

A gaming laptop tops all. A portable PC, take everywhere plug it into anything, unlimited storage options, unlimited peripheral options, cheaper games, freaking emulate and game across the ages for free, use it for productivity, easy streaming of Netflix in freakin bed if you wish( or the Rhine lol), moddable games for free ( aw man the fov is too narrow and gives me motion sickness, no problem open the ini and....oh never mind you are on console) easily record your gameplay, no 3rd party hsrdware crap, just dl fraps boomshakalaka then upload to anything you want........

I think I may have covered most things gaming related....oh wait! Windowed gaming biatches, I stream a few live surf events over the year
so I keep it running in the background and listen to the commentary, when something is going on at the event I just alt-tab out and watch. Otherwise I halve my screen have the stream and game on either side.

flip i could go on and on. Just end this bolony and get a quality laptop in Germany bro.
