I spotted this article on PC Gamer, makes interesting reading for us bargain hunters and Steam sale addicts.

How long does it take games to be cheap on Steam?

A TL;DR overview of their findings:
What we learned

Popular big-budget AAA games get a 50% discount after an average of 7 months: expect to wait this long for your Witchers and your Fallouts.

Breakout indie games take a longer 9.2 months to hit 50%, on average: these include your Rocket Leagues and your Undertales, and typically launch at around $20.

The less popular a game is, the faster it will be discounted: for games in the $30+ category, the least commercially-successful dropped in price 60% faster than the bestsellers.

I wish I could get my hands on proper price history data, I'd love to do some proper analysis of the entire Steam library.

Of course companies are also under pressure to discount their games over the steam summer/winter sales, but the newer games dont discount as much.
