mmo's... is there any real hope out there ?

aion, which uses the CryEngine, looks pants :( i saw those "latest" screenshots and all hopes are fading. it looks just like WoW, if not worse

why can't they bring out something like an Oblivion MMO, or a Fallout MMO? with real-time combat, none of this "i-hit-you-then-you-hit-me" bullcrap.

i might try Guild Wars 2 this time around though

I've played it. I can honestly say that it's the best Free to Play MMO I've played to date (and I've tried quite a few).

Make no mistake about it - there are bugs, translation errors and other issues that need to be fixed, however one has to remember that it is in open beta. They release at least one large patch per week and seem very committed to ironing out all the issues that need to be dealt with.

The game reminds me a lot of World of Warcraft. The graphics are similar, the art style as well as the music at times. Most of the game mechanics are those used in WoW too. On the whole, it plays well and it doesn't leave a bad taste in your mouth. They've got quite a bit of new content planned for after release too, which is reassuring as it ensures one won't be left bored with nothing to do once one reaches maximum level on both primary and secondary professions.

I'm very keen to give this one a go...

As stated earlier, we feel obligated to grind for the sake of not wasting our subs. I have prophecies and nightfall for guild wars, but only a lvl 10 char on each. I should really commit more to them.

As for runes of magic, not having to pay for a game will open up a whole new attitude towards the game. Where can I pull it from?

Looks like WoW? Eish thankfully it looks nowhere near WoW to me :p

You can grab and account from www.runesofmagic.com/us and a local download from gaming.do.co.za

Whoops, I made a mistake in the download URL. Swapped the "do" and the "gaming" around by accident. Fixed now.

I don't have enough bandwidth to be downloading things like that ... these online MMO's tend to be whopper downloads.

Got someone else to download Perfect World for me when that came out ... turned out not to be really worth the wait. Aion I wouldn't have played if it wasn't for the monthly fees - I suppose KOTOR will also be subscription based?

Here's my weird MMORPGS/MMO's list.
First off there was diablo1. Lots of players + bnet and a common goal. Rich level 99 and complete hell.

Then there was Runescape, it was so bloody awsome, thousands of players online. It was EPIC.

Somehow managed to get my hands on Anarchy online a year later and immediately quit runescape, finally figured out what huge piece of crap it was lol. I was brainwashed by the idea of playing the same game as everyone else.
Anarchy was my first proper real MMORPG experience. I can still renember going into the subway all alone then having to team up with random peeps to get deeper and deeper. Most of the lore of the game was based on famous movies and the pop culture back then so it was pretty interesting to explore the world and discovering these easter eggs and it was a big world. Also gets the title for the worst and most unsatisfying pvp in history.

After that things changed for the better:
Starcraft > Warcraft III > Dota > Guild Wars > WoW(30 days) > Dota > Guild Wars

Guild Wars was and still is the most satisfying mmo/mmorpgs experience out there for me. Just a shame some people hated it (all my friends). Luckily met a few new ones online, the entire campaign could be played via coop and pvp was awsome. I started off with the factions campaign with my sin. Unlike 95% off all mmorpgs these days the game started at lvl1 and I've never met any class in any game that was this much fun.
Also where my name comes from, tried to think of a corny name for a character that relies on stealth not knowing that in guild wars a sin relies on total offence, just striking at the right moment. The game also proved that endless leveling was pointless. Also the ability to change builds and play the game differently each time kept the game dynamic.

Thus I'm gonna be careful of Guild wars 2 since they seemed to have missed the boat.
So that leaves Darkfall which just came out and Eve online which I just never played. Those are the only two mmorgs I know about that can still be immersive.

i've found requim bloodymare to be refreshing on being just differant- its not a great looker, but differant is sometimes beter over eye candy...

...try some Runes later on :)

Also have Requiem Bloodymare. Not too bad for a free mmo. Population abit low though. Can't find anyone to team up with...

In Guild Wars 2, levels beyond a certain point will be purely cosmetic. In other words, they could keep the level 20 "cap," but allow extra experience to increase the number next to you name. Therefore a level 20 and a level 100 (should they choose to let it get that far) will be of equal power.

Glorified level achievement?

Have any of you tried "Dungeon Runners" by NCSoft yet? I have it downloading at the moment. I get the impression that it is a little more tongue-in-cheek than the average RPG.

I tried Dungeon Runners when it was in pre-release.
It was a bit tedious to me, the graphics as not too bad, although cartoony. Couldn't get hooked on it. It is a quirky game though. Yes, you can say tongue-in-cheek. It's an action RPG, similar to Guild Wars to a degree.

I went back to Guild Wars.

why i liked mythos. but as with hg:l we have billy to thank for it being now korean IP only.

There are a few things that I quite liked about EVE online, but all in all I found it to be very slow and got rather boring pretty quickly. I would really like a game that took some of the better features from EVE and mixed them with something like the old single player game Privateer.

Having the options of mining and construction, and the persistant universe where clans/companies/guilds whatever you call them can "own" a system or area is awesome. The combat of Privateer where you control, the direction of your ship and all that is great.

The game is meant to be funny. I didn't like it personally.
