Buying an UltraHD TV

So I've finally saved up a bunch of eBucks for a new UHD big screen TV. With FNB working hard to give their customers as little reward as possible, it took freakin forever to save, but here we are. With Makro vouchers bought without any discount :(.

Anyway, is there anything I must look out for or that I must avoid? I've already decided to go for flat screen and avoid the curved TVs after reading up a bit.

So far I'm looking at this one:
https://www.makro.co.za/electronics-and-gaming/lg-65-165cm-smart-uhd-led-tv-325561EA

I'll be standing in a crazy queue at Makro like an idiot on black Friday when this will go for about R18k (which is pretty much my maximum price). Is this fine or are there any specific features missing or is another brand preferable? I'd be willing to look at a slightly smaller screen if there is a feature that makes a big difference to the quality of the TV.

Basically I want the TV to do the following:
  • Play Bluray & DSTV
  • Gaming (using cable from PC and XBox controller)
  • Showmax
  • Project my Galaxy S7's screen to the TV

This TV must last me 10 years. My experience with my current 40/42" LG HDTV has not been great.
Also, now I have to renew my TV license after all. :(

That looks like a good TV. I also saw the deal earlier today.

I'm not really an expert, however you do want the following (from what I've read over the past year or so):

- HDMI 2.0 or 2.0a, so that your TV will support 2160p content at 60fps. HDMI 1.4 only supports 30 fps (the LG website does not specify what HDMI this TV has)
- HDCP 2.2 (which this TV has) so that you can play encrypted 2160p content which is starting to roll out *soon

HDR is also something to consider; this TV has HDR Pro which, from what I can find on the net, only supports up to 8bit colour and not 10bit that True HDR does (or whatever the marketing lingo is).

I really hope you haven't taken those vouchers yet. Because
1. You could have taken Checkers vouchers at 40% off and then buy the tv at House & Home.
2. Wait to see what specials FNB has on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
3. Follow the MyBroadband thread where there's speculation that the 40% discount on Makro vouchers are coming back either in December or January.

I've also been saving eBucks for a 4K tv funnily enough but haven't made enough yet. :( I really wanted to buy that Hisense that the eBucks store has/have at 40% off but I don't qualify because I haven't got enough eBucks.

Thanks for the feedback.

I've bought one voucher so far and I'll buy another one after midnight (maybe there is a Makro voucher on special for Black Friday :).

Do the Checkers vouchers work at House & Home? I went to one of the shops once to ask if it does and they said no.

The mission with eBucks shop specials are that you either need to buy the whole thing with eBucks or you get no discount. Their other TVs that were on special so far that was like R5k-R10k off, comes out to about the same price as Makro's normal price.

I saw the HiSense but after having a Sinotec (using it as a 3rd computer screen), I'm a bit wary of TVs that aren't Samsung or LG. Has not been the best experience. (Then again, neither has my main LG that I'm replacing)

It'll be awesome if Makro vouchers are on special tomorrow. :)

I've never tried the Checkers voucher thing myself but the people at MyBroadband have said that it worked for them. If someone told you no then I would rather not try it.

I'm not too happy with Samsung again. I had a problem with my Samsung tv a couple of years back and it was just out of warranty. They wanted to charge me more to fix it than what I originally paid for the tv. I wasn't very happy with that at all. But I suppose it'll be like that with all of them.

I hope you find a cool tv! Isn't that LG one that you want on special tomorrow? I know there's an LG 4K tv on special tomorrow at Makro but I'm not sure which one.

Let us know what you go with! :)

It would be awesome if it works. Maybe I should buy a smallish voucher and go test.

Ironically, I've always wanted Samsung but somehow ended up with LG (and again this time it seems). Usually due to specials. I'm using a 32" Samsung FHD LED/LCD TV for my main pc screen and it works awesome. The difference in quality is extremely noticeable during the dark scenes in Witcher 3 and the LG sometimes has some hectic screen tearing. I'm not completely sure, but I think the LG is newer than the Samsung (the LG is 3D too). The TV's sound is also literally unusable.
I think this new LG is quite high end so I probably won't have similar issues.

I'm eyeing that exact TV that is on special tomorrow. Stocks are just very limited. Already measured the box and my car. I'm basically going to put all the seats down and drive with my head between my knees to make the TV fit in the Golf.

I don't think ebucks will work for this one, but this is also a nice price for a very nice TV (the 60").

It's basically just a step below the top of the range Samsung SUHD 9 series curved TV's, and it is flat, which is a bonus in my book.

It is looking really attractive right about now. I must resist...

Ok, so I survived. It was hell and I'm never doing it again, but for a R7000 discount, I was willing to make the exception this once.
I was there first to ask for the 65" TV (it wasn't on the floor so I couldn't grab one and claim it) and between the disorganized store and the store & TV license server being offline, it took half a day.

They only had 4 of these TVs and when it was time for mine to come out, they've been "sold out" (2 were sold and 2 were reserved for online orders). So they upgraded me :) to the SUHD (65UH770) instead of the UHD (65UH603). Not sure how they were planning a Black Friday weekend because by 11:00 on Friday, all TVs, decorders, gaming consoles, etc. were already sold out.

So with regards to the TV, it is pretty awesome. I had to reconfigure my whole setup because my PC and PS3 weren't being picked up when going through my Sony amp, so I had to make everything go directly into the TV and then output the sound to the amp. The quality for gaming, DSTV and even plain old DVDs is awesome. I still play games at 1080 resolution (too much of a mission to go higher due to my PC setup) but overall, I can't believe how big the difference is.

So last week I went ahead and bought myself one of these and by golly is it magnificent. Didn't have much time over the weekend to play with it so still need to do that and tinker with the settings.
