Nioh (Japanese: 仁王, lit. "benevolent king") is an upcoming action role-playing game developed by Team Ninja for the PlayStation 4 (PS4). It will release worldwide in February 2017, be published by Koei Tecmo in Japan and Sony Interactive Entertainment internationally.

Gameplay, which was inspired by the Souls series, revolves around navigating levels and defeating monsters that have infested an area. Nioh takes place in the early 1600s during a fictionalized version of the Sengoku period, when Japan was in the midst of civil war prior to the ascension of the Tokugawa shogunate. A sailor named William Adams, in pursuit of an enemy, arrives in Japan and is enlisted by Hattori Hanzō, servant to Tokugawa Ieyasu, in defeating yokai that are flourishing in the chaos of war.

When a Nioh Alpha demo was released on PS4 earlier this year, we discovered that the action game allows you to switch between two different modes that improved either the frame rate or resolution. Now, developer Team Ninja has announced what each mode will do when playing the final game on both the standard PS4 and Pro.

Nioh is scheduled to release worldwide on February 9, 2017. It had a second demo test for a limited time, and thanks to feedback from fans to both tests, the developer is going to make changes, such as revamping the stamina system and removing durability.

PS4
  • Movie Mode - Unspecified "high resolution graphics with stable 30 FPS"
  • Action Mode - Unspecified resolutions with "a stable 60 FPS"
  • Movie Mode (Variable frame rate) - Unspecified "high resolution graphics with a variable frame rate that may go over 30 FPS"
PS4 Pro with a 1080p display
  • Movie Mode - Stable 1920×1080 resolution with high quality anti-aliasing at 30 FPS
  • Action Mode - Stable 1920x1080 resolution at 60 FPS
PS4 Pro with a 4K display
  • Movie Mode - Stable 3840x2160 resolution at 30 FPS
  • Action Mode - Stable 1920x1080 resolution at 60 FPS

I played the trial on Sunday evening. I had way more fun than I was expecting. It definitely scratches that souls-like itch.

The combat mechanics are more complex than the souls games (reminds a lot of Ninja Gaiden), but the fundamental feel of the experience is very much influenced by FromSoftware's efforts. I absolutely want to play the full release!

Isn't it by the same people that did Ninja Gaiden? I thought it was.

I've only since played the original open beta and didn't give it much time. Though now that a lot has been done and changed, the videos I've seen, I think this is a definite purchase for me.

Yeah it's been developed by Team Ninja (Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive) so a lot of their combat design philosophy is in this game, it's extremely satisfying - more so because the game is no joke.
 
So the reviews are looking amazing and the game still has (just under) a week till release, in lieu of that some great videos and thoughts on the game are surfacing.



 
2 more days!!!! Can't wait to start playing, played both alphas and the last chance trial. This is gonna be great.

I'm definitely getting it, just not on release though. Too many other games on my plate right now.

Would have considered it, but I don't own a PS4, so no.

Perhaps one day I can get a PS4 for real cheap so I can play Bloodbourne and then this.
 
I was really looking forward to this..then while watching a video yesterday I realized that the DLC weapon/armor are incredibly op and makes the game easy mode. Not too mention that they mentioned the game with have pvp down the line, so if you buy the special editions with the weapons/armor dlc included you'll pretty much be playing pay to win.
