Insuring your PC

So we're still battling with insurance for all the stuff at work that the lightning killed last year.

Then I wondered if people insured other stuff.

Some people have their cellphones insured or their DSTV decoders insured (although that seems like a waste of money to me.) But your PC can be way more expensive does anyone insure it? Is it worth it? I've had my PC for 7 years now and so far would have been paying for nothing I guess. If you do insure how does that work and how much does it cost?

So if something did happen would they replace with the same parts if it died somehow? Or is it like car insurance where your car slowly decreases in value so you don't get the amount that you originally paid?

My PC is a specified high value item on my insurance. It's insured for R50k

A buddy of mine recently had a problem with his PC (he was suspecting lightning damage) which got me thinking about insuring my PC. I called my insurance and they said that it falls under house content insurance, unless I frequently take it off the premises (like a cellphone or laptop) then I have to specify.

I'm sure the different insurnace companies handle it differently though.

hahaha..... 3 months later and finally the insurance has paid out for my PC. Yes, that's right, I been without a PC since 25 November!

Yeah, I have to specify any household item with a replacement value over R20k

So basically PC, Laptops, Switch and my Wife's jewelry (well the wedding ring and engagement ring)

Don't they ask for proof of the value?

I know mine is included in household content cover. I just replaced mine and they paid without question. I know they generally replace to equivalent spec, not value.

Yup, I had to submit component invoices and every year I get a quote from Incredible Connection on a "Replacement Value" for my PC

IC is bloody expensive, so to replace my MB, CPU, RAM, HDDs, Screens, KB, Mouse, printer, sound card, headphones, speakers, controllers and case it's R 50k

I tried to have mine insured last year but they wouldn't because I was in a house share, should try this now that I'm in a flat with a work colleague/friend, when I spoke to them it seemed like you cant get item specific insurance but it falls under household contents as you guys mentioned.

Depends on your insurance

My laptop was insured and it got damaged by water in my house, long story, i told insurance as long as they replaced it with an i7 (which is what i had) i was happy... they replaced it with a laptop nearly double the insured value of mine because they could only get new stock i7 laptops...

I tried outsurance and another company I cant recall and they couldn't do it, in any case I'm waiting for a call from old mutual who wants to give me a comparison and I also was thinking about mailing kingprice and asking them to add household to my car insurance so its very interesting that this is a topic of discussion today.

Outsurance just wants you to specify the total replacement value of all your household contents and any specific items over R75k (if I recall)

yup thats pretty much the experience I have had with all of them thus far, will see what they have to say
