ADSL versus Fibre - Price per Mbps

So i have question which may come across as stupid.. so here goes:

Does a Fibre termination point look different to that of an adsl connection point?

also if you have a fibre termination point in your house, your house is effectively fibre ready.. so why do fibre companies then still want to charge you an installation fee to use fibre if you already have a termination point?

I have a question as well.

Why do we get so many articles telling us how wonderful fibre is? Who are you trying to sell it to? The few people who already have it available probably already have it installed.

It's generally a little white/black box, which will have one cable coming in for fibre and then one or two outputs for a LAN cable. Some of them even look like a blank socket for plugs.

As for connection fee, I suppose it's the same as switching ADSL sometimes, they ask for a fee to connect you to the service.

thanks Glordit, that make sense, but i still think its day light robbery to want to charge me R999 installation/activation fee by the ISP after you have already shelled out say R1700 to have the point installed in your home.

if i want to switch adsl providers i dont have to pay to switch over to another provider

True, I know you pay (sometimes) if you are transferring a line. My only guess is that people will be willing to pay, because it's something they want.

Which ISP ? so you already had fiber beforehand and changed ISP's ?

I wonder if it has to do with the fiber provider and the ISP's arrangement e.g Octotel and afrihost.

no i was asking for a friend as they are installing fibre in her complex. the body corporate is paying for the termination point, but now this isp(that is also doing the fibre) still wants to charge a connection fee to their network of R1140).

i also looked at some fibre providers (as they started installing fibre in our complex this week through vumatel) and i see there are some providers that charge a connection fee to their network

I have the same setup Fibre in complex paid a connection fee of R600 odd rand if I recall

It is legitimately better in literally every way you can think of from a technical PoV (not cost & availability). That plus it being a topic attracting interest plus it being cutting edge = more articles.

The underlying tech infrastructure is fundamentally different.

ADSL all runs of Telkom's IPConnect network. It's all more or less the same thing and runs over the same physical wire (Telkom's) regardless of whether its Afrihost/WA.

Fibre runs over someone's specific route. As in someone put a physical fibre cable into the ground to your house. Someone owns it and access to it is restricted. So you've got all these fibre factions & access isn't automatic...so you end up with these connection fees.

That's not to say it's OK - a lot of them are just full of sht with their connection BS. Out to make money. Point is the cost structure is fundamentally different.

I think MetalSoup knows that, but his point is why all the articles, since the greater majority do not have access to fibre, so it isn't even an option.

If the articles was about Steers vs KFC (or ADSL vs LTE, perhaps), it would be fair since almost everyone has access to both and thus actually have a choice. In this instance, very few people have a choice between ADSL and Fibre; as he also stated, most people who have access to both are probably on Fibre already.

I don't think you have to convince people (especially not the ones who read these articles) that Fibre is better than ADSL. We already know that, we just want fucking Fibre already.

Fair enough. I guess the writers have to write about something :p
