I'm glad you enjoyed it. That's really weird that their internet is so bad.

yeah it is. They have a full NBN (National Broadband Network) managed by the government, but they can't guarantee you any particular speed on this network. So your ADSL contract is bought on cap only, either uncapped or a capped account, and you get the speed that the network allows on that time. I got any speed between 512 kbps and 15 Mbps during the 3 months I've been there. It depends on the time of day and the weather and the mood of the old Aboriginal shaman in North Queensland on what speed you get. And 3G is spotty at best.

It also has to do with their international links, SeaMeWe-3 Links them to Indonesia, Australia West Express (AWE) links them up to Djibouti, PIPE Pacific Cable-1 to Guam, Australia-Japan Cable to Japan, Southern Cross Cable Network to the US and Telstra Endeavour to the US via Hawaii. Effectively its just way too many hops to get anywhere decent from Aus. I've had this issue with my Australian offices. Effectively we had to split services between Perth and Sydney offices to ensure that we can most effectively get data (at a decentish rate) to Singapore and West Coast US. I feel your pain though.

Yeah dude but it's what they have to do, being a continent that at the ass side of the world. Working on Azure servers and services in Aus from SA has been a super ball ache.

Also, thanks for the additional information, I didn't know all the hops and all the connection details like that, it's really fascinating.

Yeah, they barely have any direct connections to anywhere useful. Combine that with SA's dodgy international links and you have a huge issue. Depending on how your traffic gets routed to get to Australia it's generally either via SAFE (which Terminates in Malaysia) at which point it it gets routed to SeaMeWe-3 (generally) and then to Perth. If it leaves SA via EASSy, SEACOM, Liquid Sea or Africa-1 the traffic will go via Djibouti and over Australia West Express (AWE).

Now compare that to US -> Europe which has about 18+ links JUST on the US East Coast; US West Coast -> Japan, China, Hawaii, ect is also in the 18 odd cables range.

But for Aus to connect to the US it's almost guaranteed to go via Hawaii or Japan.

That's very interesting indeed. And I thought we had it bad with our internet.

We actually don't have it THAT bad. All in all we have :

Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) running from Cape Town and ends in France @ 5.12 Tbit/s
SAT-3/WASC - Cape Town to Portugal @ 340 Gbit/s
West African Cable System (WACS) - Cape Town to UK

SAFE - Cape Town -> Durban -> Malaysia @ 440 Gbit/s

EASSy - Durban -> Sudan @ 10 Tbit/s
SEACOM - Durban -> Egypt @ 4.2 Tbit/s
Liquid Sea - Durban -> Egypt @ some unkown speed
Africa-1 - Durban -> Egypt @ some unkown speed

The Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 Ti G1 Gaming 6GB is on special at Raru for R4899. That's a great deal!

It's the card that I currently have in my machine. I run Andromeda on max settings and it never drops bellow 60 fps.

Indeed a good price, but I'm looking for something smaller, quieter and more power efficient after selling my R9 280x. I'm waiting to see whether the 1060ti materializes.

Speaking of which, where's BeoTeK? Haven't seen him posting these days.

I don't know. I normally have contact with him via whatsapp but my phone has been in for repairs since the 10th. We had a conversation on XBox but he never replied to my last message. Hopefully he is alright.

I can report that Beo is indeed fine, just on leave :)

What are all of you up to tomorrow?

Well, it seems like I'm going in to work tomorrow. I took Friday off, and then I'll probably end up at work on Saturday as well. Unfortunately I learned all of this after I took Friday off, so now my long weekend isn't really gonna be long anymore.

That's good that Beo is fine. :)

It's not so good that you have to work tomorrow! Sorry to hear that. And that you may have to work on Saturday. :(
