E3 By The Numbers

The biggest date on the gaming calendar is fast approaching. In 2 weeks time, the gaming industry comes together to showcase what we can expect to be playing in the coming months. The hype train is fast approaching!

But, hold on there fellow gamers. Before you board the hype train to Dissapointment-Town, let us look at previous E3 shows. Specifically, let's look at the games that's been announced, shown and talked about, and see where they are now.

Luckily for you, I get bored easily. And when I get bored, I start data gathering and data mining, because that's the weirdo I am. For this post, I took a list of all the games that were either playable, shown, talked about, announced or teased by the various developers during the whole conference. I also only focused on the Xbox One and PS4 platforms, and also only looked at the previous 2 year's E3.

Okay, so let's begin!!

Xbox

During the E3 conferences of 2015 and 2016, there were 63 and 60 games shown that will be coming to Xbox One. Of these games, an average of 85% of 2015 shown games and 80% of 2016 shown games have released up to date. 3 games from 2015 have been cancelled, 1 from 2016. 6 games shown at E3 2015 are still in development, and 8 from 2016. There are also 3 games shown at E2 2016 that are in the Xbox One Game Preview category as well

Out of all the games shown at the various shows, Xbox had 10 exclusives shown in 2015, of which 8 were Xbox Play Anywhere titles. In 2016, Xbox showed 17 exclusive titles, of which 15 where Xbox Play Anywhere.

Playstation

During the E3 conferences of 2015 and 2016, there were 108 and 103 games shown that will be coming to Playstation 4. Of these games, an average of 88% of 2015 shown games and 84% of 2016 shown games have released up to date. 4 games shown during 2015 has been cancelled, and 4 games live on in Early Access form. 8 games shown at E3 2015 are still in development, and 13 from 2016.

Out of all the games shown at the various shows, Sony had 20 exclusive titles in 2015 shown, and 37 exclusive titles shown in 2016.

Comparison

E3GamingSadnessList1.PNG

You can see from this comparison that there is a high percentage of PS4 games that gets released within a year's time of their showing at E3 than Xbox. It's also sad to note the small number of Xbox exclusive titles compared to that of Sony. What is also interesting to note is just how much more cross platform games the Sony console gets versus Xbox. These are games that gets released on either the PC or Nintendo consoles.

What is even more interesting is if you look at the "Development" games. There are more games listed by Sony that is still development compared to Xbox, but this is due to the sheer number of games announced for the console. What is interesting however is the lack of potential release dates associated with these games. Sony has a much higher propensity to show off games that won't be seen in years. This creates excitement for the brand, even though the games that create this excitement isn't even on the radar yet. Examples of this are Death Stranding, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Last Of Us 2, Spider Man, Shenmu 3 and God Of War 3. Over at Xbox One, only Cuphead is a high profile game without a release window.

Notes and predictions

Based on this analysis, it is safe to say that there should be more games seen at E3 2017 for Playstation than for Xbox. It should be noted though that there will also be much more games shown by Sony without release windows, where Microsoft should be able to show release windows for pretty much all their games. Seeing as Xbox Scorpio is sure to make a huge splash at this year's show, look out for the Holiday 2017 release window being displayed often.

For any more information about games and the data I used in this post, look no further than THIS LIST for all games 2015, THIS LIST for all games 2016, and THIS DOCUMENT for it all put together into one usable file

So, the question is now, what do YOU think about the turn-around of games being shown at E3 versus what comes out?

Sony's E3 conferences are always smoke an mirrors and they always seem to get away with it.

How So?

Sony are killing the competition purely with their incredible exclusives... And yes while they take a bit longer to get release dates, and actually come out, they DO come out. I cant remember one of the big exclusives from Sony being cancelled. And games like The Last of Us 2, and God of War 4 specifically, i think they release the trailers well in advance to get people to play the previous games if they haven't already.

Sony has really impressed me with the way they have approached this "console gen"...

Nicely done DieGrootHammer!

I'm very sad about the way that Microsoft handles exclusives. I look at all the PS4 exclusives that get released and it makes my mouth drool.

I think what has motivated me to make this post has been thinking about Sony. I tend to look at their presentations, and they bank so hard on the hype generated by games that are no-where close to being released. It's a valid business strategy, as it draws people into the platform although the promised games they showcase are still a way off. Interestingly, on average the release time frame is lower for Sony than Microsoft by about 4 months.

See, Sony works the numbers very well. They ensure there are enough other games coming out on their platform to make stats like this seem in their favor, while keeping high profile games and high hype games out of market for much longer than Microsoft. If you see a high profile game for Xbox, chances are good you'll be playing it within a year or two. That's not saying there aren't any exceptions to this though. But the numbers tells a very interesting story indeed.

Onto exclusives, while I do agree and lament the lack of exclusive titles on Xbox, I find myself very disinterested in the exclusive titles on PS4. The type of games reserved for the console aren't games I am interested in. In fact, looking at my current list of top games, I am much more inclined to play cross platform type games. And Forza.

people buy consoles when they expect a title announced at E3 to appear on that console

Last guardian announced for ps3 , people bought ps3's expecting the game, released a very long time later on ps4

FF7 was announced 3 years ago, will most likely be released on the ps5 since development is not even at 10%

Shenmue 3, doubt that will be released soon

death stranding, most likely 2019 (on a new platform)

Sony always rushes to announces games most of the time when development hasnt even started yet, just to drive sales and then the title doesnt even end up being released on the platform in the end.

DieGrootHammer you are the weirdo we need and love, also where are the graphs i'm disappointed that there are no graphs.
