"Disappearing airtime" is real – We have the proof

We set up four identical phones with brand new SIM cards from South Africa's four mobile network operators and discovered that airtime was slowly being depleted on the MTN SIM.

If I didn't see this with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it.

I very much doubt the LTE thing is true.

Fully expect it to be exposed as a straight up lie shortly...

Well turns out to be half true.

LTE pushes everything over a data link not just data usage.

MTN counted that "overhead" against user's data allocation all the other providers don't.

So it's rather shady but unless you're poor it's not a big financial deal.

It won't really scale...so this will hit the guy that loads R12 and no data bundle...while someone with 2gb won't notice a thing.

The same applies with ADSL btw...you lose about 25megs a month to phantom data. i.e. router is off. (or was it 2.5mb?)
